About the Role

The position will support the General Counsel and the Legal, Governance Policy and Risk Team to provide high-quality professional governance support and advice to assist senior employees of the Catholic Education Office, Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn (CECG) and members of the Catholic Education Commission (CEC) to discharge their duties in a transparent, lawful and accountable manner.

You’ll have a broad understanding of corporate governance and how compliance issues affect large and complex organisations. You’ll have the willingness to take initiative and assist the wider team, whilst maintaining a high level of confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the General Counsel to provide advice to schools and the Executive on corporate governance principles and assist to provide oversight of compliance programs to ensure that legislative requirements are met (including governance requirements under Education Legislation, the ACNC Act, etc).
  • Assist the General Counsel with the further development and implementation of organisation-wide governance frameworks, including delegation of authority.
  • Assist with meeting periodic reporting requirements, including reports required by external stakeholders and government agencies.
  • Provide governance assistance to Committees across CECG including ensuring that each CECG Governance Committee has clear Terms of Reference or a Committee Charter, and clear lines of reporting and accountability. Support the coordination and facilitation of induction and professional development for Committee members where appropriate.
  • Maintain a calendar of key dates relevant to Governance Committees and oversee the development and implementation of Governance Committee work plans and reporting templates.
  • Any other services that the General Counsel or Director of CECG may require.


Essential Criteria

  • Ability to undertake high-level analysis of a broad spectrum of governance and compliance issues affecting a large and complex organisation.
  • Ability to assist the General Counsel in the delivery of accurate and timely advice
  • Ability to work with senior members and key internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work individually and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Professional experience and working knowledge with computer software packages including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and electronic document applications (TRIM is desirable).
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with a courteous and collaborative approach.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management skills, including demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
