Job overview

We are one of the top-performing colleges in the country, situated in the cosmopolitan seaside city of Brighton & Hove. Working here offers the combination of both a wonderful place to work and a great city in which to live. Our students and staff are colourful, aspirational and hard-working – which is perhaps why 96% of employees would “recommend BHASVIC as a good place to work” and many of our students go on to Higher Education.

BHASVIC aims to transform lives through learning and has been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. We strive to build a contemporary, creative learning culture that has delivered a sustained track record of excellent educational outcomes.

Our Governors comprise individuals from business, the local community, staff, students and parents, and together, the Governing Body sets the strategic direction and culture for the College and ensures that good governance is at the heart of College activity.

As part of our succession planning, we are seeking an individual who has the gravitas, commitment and interest to lead the team of Governors at BHASVIC. The successful candidate would be appointed as a Governor in the first instance, allowing for a thorough induction by shadowing the present Chair before the potential for taking up the role of Chair in their second year, subject to the usual appointment process.

The role of Chair is key in many areas, including:

  • Ensuring that the strategic direction and values of BHASVIC are clearly articulated by working closely with the Principal and Governance Professional to ensure the strategy is delivered in line with our values
  • Working with Governors to ensure that there is effective and appropriate oversight of the Corporation and a “critical friend” challenge to the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team
  • Working in partnership with Chairs of other colleges, other learning bodies and local community organisations so that BHASVIC is engaged in the wider skills and learning debate and understands local needs

To be successful, you will have the ability to work in partnership within and outside the college and to challenge and debate in a respectful and thought-provoking way. Critical to the role will be experience of leading teams, and insights on the function of Governance would be valued.

The successful applicant can come from any sector – business, voluntary, local community or government-funded. Whilst specific experience of education is desirable, we are looking for an individual with the passion and right behaviours to ensure that BHASVIC provides an outstanding education to our students – delivered by all of our people – so that we continue to be an important part of the Brighton, Hove, and Sussex community, providing an effective and relevant service.

The standard term of office for all our Governors is three years, after which Governors may be reappointed for a further term.

Being a Governor can bring great personal and professional benefits, and full training is provided.

For further details, including how to apply, please visit: www.bhasvic.ac.uk/the-college/working-for-us/current-vacancies (CVs not accepted).

Closing date: 23 May 2022.

The Governing Body will review applications and contact shortlisted candidates by the end of May.

BHASVIC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Values and Vision

Our Vision at BHASVIC is to be a Contemporary Creative Learning Community. We achieve outstanding levels of performance based on a culture of learning that allows all students to achieve above and beyond what they think is possible. We provide a broad and balanced all-round education, enabling students to develop as independent, confident and well-informed young adults capable of contributing to and questioning the world around them, regardless of the mix of subjects and qualifications they study. We aim to cultivate a ‘High Challenge and Low Threat’ culture where we strive for the highest possible standards, where staff and students are supported, valued and developed as individuals in a safe environment, knowing that their own well-being is key to our success. We provide a stimulating educational and social environment, with attractive, modern facilities and resources including excellent ILT provision. We encourage creative, innovative, collaborative and reflective approaches to all that we do. We are an inclusive and accepting college where every individual feels part of a community and where we play an active role in our local community to help raise standards and aspirations. We are an efficient, fair and intelligently managed organisation that achieves value for money and functions on a sound business basis with robust financial management.

Ofsted

“Learners make excellent progress, and in some cases exceptional progress. Most do much better than might be expected from their prior achievements when they join the college. This added value is a consistently strong feature of the college since the previous inspection when it was highlighted as a key strength for A level learners. It is particularly noteworthy given the relatively high attainment of learners when they start their courses.”
