Job overview

Lomond School is a day and boarding school offering an independent education to boys and girls from age 3 to age 18. We have approximately 400 pupils, with the Boarding House ‘Burnbrae’ accommodating up to 60 young people from the age of 9.

We are the only school in the West of Scotland with boarding. We have a modern, purpose built, boarding house which houses both boys and girls. Our boarders come from Britain as well as other countries around the world, adding an important international and multi-cultural dimension to our school.

The ethos of boarding at Lomond is that of a large family and the quality of care and the welfare of the pupils are uppermost. We firmly believe that Burnbrae is a home. Busy, happy, purposeful are epithets that are commonly used and young men and women are able to grow up in an atmosphere where freedom, trust and responsibility have their place alongside discipline, supervision and encouragement. We believe that we have the balance right whilst recognising the necessity of responding to the needs of the individual.

The AHP should try to ensure that the boarding life of all students is a rich and fulfilling experience, where the growth and development of the individual is fostered in a secure and happy environment. He/she should promote community living, where relationships are based on the values of trust and respect.

The Lomond School PE Department enables all children of mixed ability from Nursery to S6 to be enthusiastic and reach their potential in Physical Education and Games.

The PE Department has 3 full time members of staff and the sporting facilities are situated half a mile from the main school. The pupils are transported to the Sports Hall by bus.

The facilities comprise a custom designed Sports Hall with 6 badminton courts, indoor facilities for most sports, a climbing wall and fitness suite. Other assets include an astro turf pitch, 3 grass rugby pitches and tennis courts. Teaching takes place both inside and outside throughout the year.

To assist in ensuring the continuation of the high standard of care our Boarders and their families expect, we are now looking to recruit a Graduate Assistant Boarding Houseparent / P.E. Assistant for the start of the 2018-19 academic year.

This post will be an Assistant Houseparent (AHP) role combined with assisting the PE Department in delivering lessons and extra-curricular sport. Duties will be primarily based in the boarding house and the PE department. We therefore welcome applications from graduates in sports related disciplines who are considering teaching as a profession and wish to gain experience before embarking on their career. To fulfil the requirements of the Care Inspectorate the successful candidate will need to provisionally register with the Scottish Social Service Council (SSSC).

Supporting the Boarding Houseparent in the running of the House, this position is a responsible and weighty one. Requiring resilience, patience, clear-sightedness, compassion, strength and an unfailing sense of humour. Perhaps needless to say, it is also one of the most rewarding roles in the Boarding School environment.

The closing date for this vacancy is 12 noon on Monday 16 April.

Lomond School is a co-educational independent school, for children aged 3 to 18 years, positioned in the elegant suburbs of the coastal town of Helensburgh located only 10 minutes from Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Lomond School has recently been authorised as an International Baccalaureate World School for the Diploma and Career-related Programmes and will be delivering these as well as existing Scottish Qualifications from August 2021.

At Lomond School we believe passionately that education should be about supporting our young people to develop and grow, both academically and personally, as rounded individuals with strong values who are ultimately prepared to embark confidently and successfully on their life beyond Lomond School. We uphold this commitment with six Guiding Principles which are delivered throughout our curriculum and co-curriculum. These include: Internationalism; Environmentalism; Adventure; Leadership; Lifelong Learning and Service. To find out more visit our website at www. lomondschool.com.

We provide small class sizes, an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, attention to the individual and a strong record of academic achievement which opens the door to allow new experiences, skills and talents to be explored. All aspects of development are accorded importance, be they academic, musical, dramatic, sporting or in wider outdoor activities.

The Lomond Family

Our experienced pastoral care team ensures the welfare and onward progression of all of our students. Our young people are well known by staff and teachers and we see ourselves as a large family where any issues or problems are identified and dealt with promptly and effectively.

Extra-curricular and Outdoor Learning

Our location means that there is a particular emphasis on outdoor pursuits. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is, without doubt, a significant feature and we have enjoyed great success carrying out expeditions both locally and abroad. Many of our trips and excursions revolve around our passion for the outdoors and have included trekking in Morocco, canoeing in Norway and skiing in Austria.

Living at Lomond

Lomond School is the only school in the West of Scotland with boarding for children aged 9 to 18. We have a modern, purpose built, boarding house which houses both boys and girls and thus allows brothers and sisters to live in the same accommodation, essentially as family. We think of our boarding house as home rather than an extension of school. Most of our boarders come from both Britain and other countries around the world, which adds an important international and multi-cultural dimension to our school. Our boarding facility adds a distinctive dimension to the school; the mix of cultures and backgrounds enriches our curriculum and co-curriculum, supporting all of our pupils to develop their global awareness and understanding. Our infrastructure boasts a mix of modern, purpose built structure and characterful listed buildings, which make for an inspirational setting for our young people.
