Job overview

Cranleigh School seeks to appoint for September 2023 a good honours graduate to join our flourishing Classics Department for a one-year Graduate Assistant position. The post would suit someone who is looking to start a career in the subject. The successful candidate should expect to teach Classical subjects in years 9-11, with the possibility of some A level teaching for the right candidate. The successful candidate will also show a willingness to contribute in other ways to the life of a busy boarding school.

Cranleigh is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day Senior School consisting of around 670 girls and boys of 13–18 years of age. There is also a Preparatory School in close proximity. Cranleigh aspires to be a beacon of excellence in learning and teaching and is committed to the continuing professional development of all employees

The successful candidate will ideally be either a) currently completing the final year of a degree in Classics (or related degree) or b) a recent graduate in Classics (or related degree). They will be self-motivated, good humoured and will relish the challenge presented by being part of a cheerful, supportive and highly successful department.

This post would be ideal for anyone considering teaching or indeed just looking for a great place to spend a year getting some salaried experience in the field of education. No teaching qualifications are necessary – guidance and support will be offered to the successful candidate who will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team player.

In addition, they would be expected to get involved in all aspects of this busy boarding school, including acting as a tutor to a group of students within a House and delivering some of the school’s PSHE programme. This would normally include one evening duty per week. All teachers are expected to contribute to the School’s co-curricular programme alongside their academic responsibilities; a willingness to assist with any of the school’s main sports - rugby, hockey, netball, football, cricket, athletics and tennis – would be beneficial.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of the post informally, please contact Dr Dan Hogg, Head of Classics by email in the first instance: dawh@cranleigh.org

Please read ‘Why teach at Cranleigh?’ to be found on our website which gives an impression of the ethos to which it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute.

This is, initially, a fixed term appointment for one year from September 2023 and comes with a salary of circa £18,000. Accommodation and all meals in term-time are provided. The successful candidate will also receive 17 weeks holiday.

Candidates should state fully what their particular interests are and where they think they can make contributions to the wider life of the school.

To apply, please submit a brief letter of application together with a completed Academic Application Form, available from the School’s website: https://www.cranleigh.org/welcome/work-at-cranleigh/teaching/ supported by a Curriculum Vitae, including the names and contact details of two referees.

Applications should be sent as soon as possible and no later than Thursday 9th March 2023.

Applications will be considered as they are received and therefore the vacancy may close earlier than advertised.

Please send to The Headmaster, Cranleigh School, Horseshoe Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8QQ or via email to recruiting@cranleigh.org

All applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The post holder will be subject to a DBS check.

Cranleigh is a leading co-educational weekly boarding and day school set in a stunning rural location in more than 280 acres on the edge of the Surrey Hills. In 2015 the School celebrated its 150th anniversary; it has come a long way since its establishment as a school to support the local farming community in 1865.

Cranleigh’s beautiful campus is exceptionally well equipped, with outstanding classrooms, studio, performance and sports facilities, including three theatres, twelve rehearsal and performance spaces, competition pitches, equestrian centre, sports centres, golf course, outdoor education centre and swimming pool.

There are strong links between the School and nearby Cranleigh Preparatory School and pupils also join from a wide variety of other prep schools across London and the home counties, creating a lively, House-based community of young people who are drawn together by their inherent love of life and getting involved in everything Cranleigh has to offer.

In 2015 the newest addition to the Cranleigh family also celebrated a birthday. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, situated at the heart of Saadiyat Island, the Emirates’ island of culture, opened its doors to the first pupils at the Junior School in 2014. Like the other Schools in the Cranleigh family, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi shares the motto Ex Cultu Robur (from Culture comes Strength), an ethos which celebrates co-curricular success alongside academic excellence with remarkable results for every pupil, year on year.

Location
Cranleigh’s 280 acre site, situated eight miles from Guildford near the Surrey - West Sussex border, is part of Cranleigh Village and within forty-five minutes of London.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports are within easy access; there is a fast, regular train service from Guildford to Waterloo.
