Job overview

King Henry VIII College, Malaysia

Graduate Assistants

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the pioneer team establishing a new school that will open in September 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.

King Henry VIII College, Malaysia will take its first students in September 2018. It will be a fully-fledged sister school to Christ College, Brecon, one the UK’s oldest schools, founded by Henry VIII in 1541.

Like its Welsh sibling, King Henry VIII College will be a co-educational boarding and day school, with students from 3 to 18 years of age.

Christ College Brecon is set in the Brecon Beacons National Park - one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom. King Henry VIII College will have a rather more modern, urban setting in the Multi-Media Super Corridor hub that is Cyberjaya - a rapidly-developing planned township, mid-way between Kuala Lumpur City Centre and KL International Airport. The school will be an impressive modern campus, with outstanding, purpose-built facilities.

Graduate Assistants

King Henry VIII College is looking to appoint adaptable and adventurous recent graduates as Graduate Assistants (GA’s) who are interested in gaining experience in a school environment. The selected candidates will be motivated, resilient, and prepared for a challenge. They should expect to work in a variety of areas, and to liaise closely and positively with teachers and other relevant staff.

Our GA’s will have a one year contract, running for the academic year - a fixed term position until July 2019. The school is opening in September 2018, and we plan that the GA’s will join us at least two weeks before the term begins.

Academic

Depending on their qualifications and interests, and the needs of the school, our GA’s can expect to be attached to at least one academic department. The work here will be a combination of classroom help in a particular subject with individuals or groups, academic trips and activities, and administrative assistance.

Sport

GA’s, particularly those with sporting interests and qualifications, will get fully involved in the games programme at KH8. There is an integrated games programme for Years 7 to 9, and there are two games afternoons each week. There will be some Saturday matches and trips to tournaments, too.

Music & Drama

GA’s with interest and talent in the area of creative arts can expect to make a full contribution. This will be a vibrant part of the school’s life, and we very much welcome applications from graduates in performing arts, music, or drama.

Cover and general duties

GA’s will have some cover and general school duties, as part of the Staff Common Room. These duties might include covering lessons for absent colleagues, where appropriate; invigilating internal examinations; overseeing certain periods of the day in certain parts of the school.

Boarding

GA’s will usually be attached to one of the school’s boarding houses, and will help out with the weekend programme for the house they are attached to. This might include accompanying trips, or arranging activities on the school campus. It will not be every weekend. In a similar way, GA’s will contribute to House events, such as the House Competition.

It is expected that GA’s will be resident in the girls’ or boys’ boarding block as appropriate. This will either be as a Resident Assistant in a boarding house, or in one of the intern apartments.

Package:

As well as a salary for the role, GA’s are accommodated free of charges in a self-contained one-bedroom apartment. All meals are provided during term-time, and GA’s have full use of their accommodation during the school holidays. Medical and accident insurance will be provided, along with other benefits.

How to apply:

Applicants should complete and submit the Application Form, with a covering letter to:

The application deadline is 22nd January.  Candidates selected for long-list interviews will be informed by 24th January - these interviews will usually be via Skype or Facetime. In 2016, as Christ College Brecon commemorated the 475th Anniversary of its founding, the school signed an agreement with DBH Holdings of Malaysia to set up its first international school.

King Henry VIII College is a fully-fledged sister school to Christ College Brecon, and replicates its structure, values, and ethos. Christ College was founded by King Henry VIII in 1541 by Royal Charter, and is a co-educational independent day and boarding school set in the Brecon Beacons National Park,

King Henry VIII College is located in the modern, global tech hub of Cyberjaya - a rapidly-developing planned township, mid-way between Kuala Lumpur City Centre and KL International Airport. Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia, with an estimated population of 1.7 million.
