Job overview

Cranleigh seeks to appoint, for September 2022, a strong honours graduate to teach French and Spanish.  The successful candidate will teach classes from years 9 to 11 in a lively, ambitious and successful department, as well as taking a full part in the life of this busy and friendly boarding school.  There may be the opportunity for some Sixth Form teaching, therefore the potential to teach either language to A-level would be an advantage.

Cranleigh is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day senior school consisting of around 670 girls and boys of 13–18 years of age. There is also a Preparatory School in close proximity.  Cranleigh aspires to be a beacon of excellence in learning and teaching and is committed to the continuing professional development of all employees. The school offers subsidised accommodation to all teaching staff, whether on site or very nearby.

The successful candidate will ideally be currently completing the final year of a degree or be a recent graduate in Modern Languages. They will be self-motivated, good humoured and will relish the challenge presented by being part of a cheerful, supportive and highly successful department.

This post would be ideal for anyone considering a career in teaching. No teaching qualifications are necessary – guidance and support will be offered to the successful candidate, who will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team player.

In addition, he/she would be expected to be involved in all aspects of this busy boarding school, including acting as a tutor to a group of students within a boarding house. This would normally include one evening duty per week. All teachers are expected to contribute to the school’s co-curricular programme alongside their academic responsibilities; a willingness to assist with at least one of the school’s main sports - rugby, hockey, netball, football, cricket, athletics and tennis – would be beneficial.

Please read ‘Why teach at Cranleigh?’ to be found on our website which gives an impression of the ethos to which it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of the post informally, please contact Trish Henderson, Head of Modern Foreign Languages by email in the first instance: peh@cranleigh.org

This is, initially, a fixed term appointment for one year from September 2022 and comes with a salary of circa £18,000. Accommodation and all meals in term-time are provided. The successful candidate will also receive 17 weeks holiday.

Candidates should state fully what their particular interests are and where they think they can make contributions to the wider life of the school.

Candidates are requested to submit to the Headmaster a brief letter of application, together with a completed application form supported by a full CV, as soon as possible and no later than 9.00 am on Friday 4th February 2022.

Interviews are likely to take place week commencing 7th February 2022.

Applications will be considered as they are received and the vacancy may therefore close earlier than advertised and should be sent to: The Headmaster, Cranleigh School, Horseshoe Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8QQ or via email to recruiting@cranleigh.orgrecruiting@cranleigh.org

For more information and to apply please go to our website.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The post holder will be subject to a DBS check.

Cranleigh is a leading co-educational weekly boarding and day school set in a stunning rural location in more than 280 acres on the edge of the Surrey Hills. In 2015 the School celebrated its 150th anniversary; it has come a long way since its establishment as a school to support the local farming community in 1865.

Cranleigh’s beautiful campus is exceptionally well equipped, with outstanding classrooms, studio, performance and sports facilities, including three theatres, twelve rehearsal and performance spaces, competition pitches, equestrian centre, sports centres, golf course, outdoor education centre and swimming pool.

There are strong links between the School and nearby Cranleigh Preparatory School and pupils also join from a wide variety of other prep schools across London and the home counties, creating a lively, House-based community of young people who are drawn together by their inherent love of life and getting involved in everything Cranleigh has to offer.

In 2015 the newest addition to the Cranleigh family also celebrated a birthday. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, situated at the heart of Saadiyat Island, the Emirates’ island of culture, opened its doors to the first pupils at the Junior School in 2014. Like the other Schools in the Cranleigh family, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi shares the motto Ex Cultu Robur (from Culture comes Strength), an ethos which celebrates co-curricular success alongside academic excellence with remarkable results for every pupil, year on year.

Location
Cranleigh’s 280 acre site, situated eight miles from Guildford near the Surrey - West Sussex border, is part of Cranleigh Village and within forty-five minutes of London.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports are within easy access; there is a fast, regular train service from Guildford to Waterloo.
