Job overview

Hours: 45 hours per week (Monday to Friday: 7:30 to 16:30), although some flexibility is required to accommodate seasonal variations. There may be requirements during busy periods to work additional hours.

St James comprises three independent day schools educating over 900 pupils aged 4 - 18: the Junior School and Senior Girls’ School are located in Hammersmith and the Senior Boys’ School is located in Ashford, Surrey. The schools offer a distinctive philosophical education, united with a philosophical approach to academic excellence. 

The School is looking to recruit a permanent full time Grounds Person for its Ashford site.

The role involves maintaining sports and amenity areas throughout the school. The Ashford site comprises 32 acres (13 hectares) of sports pitches, ornamental lawns, shrub borders, woodland and a lake. 

Sports facilities include two cricket squares, four rugby/football pitches, a synthetic turf area for hockey/tennis, tarmac tennis courts and synthetic cricket nets. An athletics track is marked out for the summer and the lake is used for kayaking and swimming. 

The role will be to assist the Head Grounds Person in all aspects of sports turf preparation and amenity horticulture and maintain the highest possible standards of presentation. The post holder will work as part of an overall team of six Estates staff managed by the Estates Manager, and will report to the Head Grounds Person.

The successful candidate will have good practical experience of grounds care and an ability to operate and maintain various machinery, particularly tractors and associated implements. They should be self-motivated, able to forge effective working relationships, and hold relevant qualifications. The ability to work flexibly, including occasional weekend work, is also essential.
