Job overview

The Role:

As the Group Sensory Support Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping high‑quality sensory support across all campuses within the College Group. The college offers creative, vocational, and academic pathways, and you will work closely with curriculum teams there to ensure that d/Deaf students and those with sensory impairments have fully accessible and positive learning experiences. Your leadership will be key in coordinating specialist support, embedding best practice, and ensuring that students feel confident, empowered, and able to thrive.

Across the College Group, you will lead the daily operations of the Multi‑Sensory Support Team, ensuring that support is consistent, effective, and responsive to individual learner needs. You will work closely with Supported Learning managers, tutors, sensory support workers, external specialists, and local authorities to provide a seamless and well‑coordinated service. You will also be a visible role‑model for high standards in communication support—whether through signing (BSL/SSE), lip-speaking, or note‑taking—stepping in to provide cover where necessary.

This role involves balancing strategic oversight with hands‑on practice, ensuring not only those learners receive the highest standard of support, but that staff are confident, well‑trained, and equipped to meet the evolving needs of students with sensory impairments.

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for leading and developing the Multi‑Sensory Support Team, ensuring high‑quality delivery and consistent standards across all campuses. You will oversee staff recruitment, training, deployment, and performance, and you will identify opportunities to enhance the service through innovation, quality improvement, and sector best practice. You will assess learner needs, advise curriculum teams, coordinate communication support for formal events, contribute to budget and resource planning, and provide accurate data and reports for senior leaders. You will also lead on staff awareness training, strengthen internal and external partnerships, and support students to develop independence, confidence, and self‑advocacy in their learning environment.

Who You Are:

  • Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language

  • CSW qualification (Edexcel or equivalent) including modification, lip-speaking or note-taking experience

  • A good standard of English, Maths, and IT proficiency

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience supporting d/Deaf learners or individuals with sensory needs in education or similar settings

  • Experience in line managing or leading staff

  • Strong understanding of best practice in supported learning and sensory needs

  • Ability to assess learner needs and plan appropriate support

What We Offer:

  • Pension: New City College provides a career average pension scheme for all staff (TPS or LGPS)

  • Accessibility: All college sites are easily accessible for wheelchair users and via public transport (bus, DLR, or tube).

  • On-Site Facilities: Free access to on-site gym facilities at some campuses and on-site cafes serving subsidised food and drinks.

  • Staff Development: Five CPD (Continuing Professional Development) days per year, with access to industry-standard facilities and a collaborative working environment. Leading to opportunities for career advancement and professional development in a supportive setting.

  • Financial Perks: Interest-free loans for annual travel season tickets. Health cash plan (reimbursement for dental, optical, and therapy treatments) and a completely confidential Employee assistance program.

  • Discounts: Save money on day-to-day expenses, shopping, dining out, DIY, and travel.
