Job overview

The Council of Roedean School invite applications for the role of Head from September 2023, following the departure of Mr Oliver Blond after ten years of exceptional and transformational leadership.

Roedean is an independent day and boarding school for 675 girls aged 11 to 18, located on an unparalleled 118-acre clifftop site overlooking the Channel and Brighton Marina. Founded in 1885, the School has a rich and unique history and is driven by the central mission to inspire and challenge each student to develop her own strengths and passions; to seek the highest academic and personal standards for herself, and to develop a strong foundation for her future.

The School maintains a strong reputation as a leading all-girls’ boarding school with excellent facilities that have seen extensive refurbishment and investment in recent years. Girls at Roedean enjoy a broad, holistic offering that inspires excellence across both academic and co-curricular provision within a warm and nurturing school community with strong pastoral care at its heart.

This position presents the opportunity for an outstanding leader to make a real impact in girls’ education and upon the future development and strategy of a well-established institution. The successful candidate will be a bold and adventurous leader with a deep commitment to education and pupil welfare, strong commercial acumen and the innate ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders. This person will be naturally outward-facing and forward-thinking with a robust, strategic mindset that will build upon the School’s existing successes whilst bringing to bear ambitious plans for the School’s development.

Values and vision

The School was founded in 1885, and the founding sisters wanted to provide a “thorough, physical, intellectual, and moral” education. This ethos continues today, and Roedean provides a genuinely holistic education, in which all elements complement each other; this approach places a high value on all the experiences that happen beyond the classroom in sport, art, drama, music, and dance, as well as community outreach and partnerships.

The ‘Six Pillars’ of Roedean are to encourage healthy and active living, a strong academic foundation, an appreciation of sport, culture, and the arts, to build independence of thought and character, to build on skills and confidence, and to have moral and personal values.
