Job overview

A unique opportunity to lead a thriving, modern prep school, reinvented for the 21st Century.  The Governors of Terra Nova School are inviting applications from candidates to succeed Phil Stewart, under whose guidance Terra Nova has revolutionised its teaching and learning, recruited its first international students and re-established a full seven-day boarding provision.

Terra Nova is an independent IAPS co-educational boarding and day prep school in Cheshire for pupils aged 2½ to 13.  Founded in 1897, the school now strives to create a dynamic, progressive and internationally-minded environment that encourages every pupil to explore, question and flourish.  With a record 300 pupils on roll and with waiting lists in many year groups, the school is well-funded and plans for further development are in place.

Whilst Terra Nova recognises the benefits of a traditional prep school, it has adopted a firmly forward-thinking attitude, recognising that the school needs to continue and even accelerate its development in order to reflect the future society in which its children will live.  The Governors of Terra Nova are determined to continue this pro-active, progressive approach, and are looking for an innovative leader who will set new standards, embrace new educational ideas and guide the school through changing times with vision, diligence, energy and enthusiasm.

About Terra Nova School

The School

Terra Nova is a leading Prep School for children age 2.5 to 13 years old. It is predominantly a day school, but offers an extended day in which children can stay for supervised Prep, tea, evening activities and overnight. There is, therefore, a thriving boarding community throughout the week.

From your very first visit, you will recognise that there is something special about Terra Nova School, with its successful blend of traditional values and fresh thinking and its wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere.

At Terra Nova we firmly believe that children who are happy and inspired succeed. Our broad curriculum, exceptional pastoral care and nurturing environment ensure that our children are both happy and inspired, and that they each develop their individual strengths.

For all at Terra Nova, academic success and good character are integral goals and in their attainment our children benefit from small classes, superb facilities and talented teachers. We are proud of the fact our children gain entrance to a wide range of the UK’s top independent schools and proud to say that their success thereafter is in no small part attributable to their fine start.

The children here take part in a wide variety of co-curricular activities and they each get the opportunity to participate in an array of sports, helping them to learn the importance of teamwork, build resilience and win and lose graciously. Throughout their time at the school, children are encouraged to try new experiences and take risks, which helps to build their self confidence, ignite passions and make lifelong friends.

We are fierce advocates of the traditional prep school model that allows our children to study with us until 13, preserving childhood until they reach their teens. However, whether leaving us at 13+ or at 11+, by the time our children move on to their senior school they are assured, motivated young people, well prepared to thrive and deal with the excitements and challenges that lie ahead.

I encourage you to come and visit us in our magnificent 35 acre rural setting, across from the awe-inspiring, internationally renowned Lovell Telescope, so that you can see for yourself what makes Terra Nova such an outstanding school.
