Job overview

Newport Girls' High School is one of the country's leading girls' grammar schools. The Governors of NGHS seek to appoint an ambitious, enthusiastic and committed Head/Director of Sixth Form to lead all aspects of Sixth Form provision at NGHS. With the support of a dedicated Sixth Form Administrator, the successful candidate will have responsibility for monitoring and tracking student progress, supporting students with any welfare matters, overseeing Higher Education entry and communicating with parents as necessary. The post of Head of Sixth Form may suit a strong, but emerging middle leader with sixth form tutor/UCAS experience. The post of Director of Sixth Form will involve joining the school's extended leadership team and may appeal to colleagues who have held a Head of Sixth Form or Assistant Head of Sixth Form role before.

The successful postholder will also work closely with the Deputy Headteacher on all matters of student recruitment into our Sixth Form. We have an ever-increasing number of students applying to 'NGHS6' and wish to develop this further. Skills in recruitment/marketing and/or leading individual advice and guidance (IAG) discussions would be a welcome asset. Currently about 30-40% of our Sixth Form transfer into NGHS in Year 12 and we have around 170 students in total in the Sixth Form. We are a small school, but this also allows us to really know and support each student individually.

NGHS is a fabulous school to join as a teacher and leader. We have a welcoming, supportive staff body, engaged and committed students and their families and opportunities to make a really positive difference to the lives and futures of some of the country's top students. Our 2017 results placed us 45th in the country with around 70% A*-B and 90% A*-C at A-level. Our curriculum is unashamedly academic with 18 A-level subjects on offer. Class sizes are manageable and compare favourably to other schools; averaging around 16 at A-level.

The new Headteacher took up post in January 2018 and has just appointed next year's student leadership team, who are a tremendous asset to the school with excellent ideas and a commitment to making their mark on the Sixth Form next year. As we approach our centenary and our new Sixth Form building has just opened, there is a real opportunity here to take the Sixth Form forwards and we look forward to your application.

Our application pack offers more information about the school. Please contact the Headteacher with any queries via schooloffice@nghs.org.uk. Please do not apply via the TES website, rather visit our school website to download the application form. No CVs will be accepted.

NGHS is committed to safeguarding children and young people. All post holders are subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and satisfactory references (including one from your current employer).

Closing date - Monday 16 April 2018 at 9am.

Values and vision

Newport Girls' High School takes great pride in its strong reputation for academic excellence. The secondary school works hard to provide a high-quality curriculum with a broad range of subjects. Teachers also seek to ensure that pupils have a caring and comfortable environment in which to learn.

The school day at Newport runs from 8.50am until 3.45pm in order to make time for daily assemblies and longer breaks. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is available including sports such as fencing, netball and hockey.

Students join NGHS from Newport, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Market Drayton and villages in between. Around 40% of students live in Newport.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
