Job overview

The Governors of Chigwell School invite applications for the role of Head from September 2022, following the appointment of Mr Michael Punt to Bromsgrove School after 15 years of outstanding leadership.

Chigwell is an independent day and boarding school for 1040 boys and girls aged 4 – 18 years, located on an expansive 100-acre countryside campus within view of the City of London. Founded in 1629, the School has a rich heritage, enjoys a strong reputation across the Pre Prep, Junior and Senior Schools, and is currently engaged in the largest capital development programme in its history to augment already impressive facilities. The school is in a strong position with excellent results and a full roll.

Central to the School’s offering is its commitment to providing a world class education, enabling pupils to flourish in mind, body and soul. Through the inspiring curriculum, wide-ranging co-curricular opportunities and proactive pastoral support, pupils are able to reach their full potential: independent in spirit, adventurous in approach and empathetic in how they treat others.

This position offers the opportunity for an outstanding leader to make a real impact in the continuing development of a clear and ambitious vision for the School leading to its 400th anniversary, and in delivering the strategic objectives of the School’s mission through inspirational academic and professional leadership of the highest quality.

Values and vision

Chigwell School’s motto is: “aut viam inveniam aut faciam”, a Latin phrase which means literally, “Either I shall find a way or I will make one". In-keeping with this, the school wants its students to develop a “determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around us”.

The school defines its mission as aiming to cultivate a learning community that aspires to excellence in all aspects of life, including: spiritual intellectual, moral, cultural, social and emotional aspects.

Chigwell School aims to provide a rounded education in the broadest sense, encouraging pupils to develop and discover talents and interests across and beyond the curriculum in order to help them to play a full part in the life of the school, and go on to make a positive contribution to the world.

The school hopes to be a community in which pupils develop a love of learning and are challenged to think critically, and with creative curiosity, for themselves.

ISI report

“Pupils’ personal development is excellent throughout the school. They are tolerant and appreciate non-material aspects of life.
