Job overview

RSAcademics are delighted to be assisting the Governors of St James Prep School with the appointment of a new Head from September 2020, replacing Catherine Tomlinson after many years of dedicated service to the School.

St James Prep School is a co-educational IAPS day prep and nursery school, located in beautiful modern facilities in Kensington, Olympia. It belongs to the wider group of St James Schools – Senior Girls and Senior Boys. With roughly 200 children currently on roll, aged 2-11, the school caters for children of all abilities, offering a complete educational experience. Children traditionally move on to St James Senior Girls’ School, located on the same site in Kensington, or St James Senior Boys’ School in Ashford, Surrey.

At St James, the happiness and wellbeing of all are intrinsic to everything the School does. Since its foundation, the School has maintained that a rounded, balanced education is better for the child: academic success, creative, emotional and spiritual development are not mutually exclusive. This blend encourages an overall love of learning and peace of mind. Peace of mind is a message that goes straight to the heart of what the School is about, and what it delivers. St James Prep School is non-denominational. Its curriculum seeks to enrich all dimensions of the human being by drawing on the best of the world’s spiritual, cultural, academic and artistic traditions. The aim is to provide an environment in which every individual can truly flourish.

The Governors seek an individual with wisdom, energy, outstanding leadership and first-class communication skills, who is excited to be working within the St James Schools’ group, and a school with strong moral and pastoral foundations. They will possess strong marketing and external relationship building skills and have the vision and expertise to take the school on the next phase of its journey. Primarily, the individual will have an appreciation of the spiritual dimension of the School and the importance of unity, beauty and the real potential of the human being.

A wonderful opportunity exists for the next Head of St James. This is a thoroughly ambitious and forward-thinking school. A competitive remuneration package will be offered.

About St James Preparatory School

St James Prep School is a co-educational IAPS day prep and nursery school for children aged 2-11. An oasis of calm in bustling Kensington, the school is resourced with enviable outside space (including a forest school), a fully-resourced teaching kitchen, science labs, and a new ICT Suite.

The school prides itself on adding value both to the academic results and the character of its pupils. Lessons start and end with The Pause – a moment of stillness that supports focus and wellbeing. Love of learning is the preferred route to success so that pupils get great results for the right reasons, and without the stress of a hothouse atmosphere. Pupils can progress on to senior girls’ or boys’ schools – the entry is automatic. But the emphasis is on choice with a robust 11+ programme.

The Good Schools Guide describes the School as, ‘Unique. A relaxed, yet focused atmosphere unlike any we have encountered elsewhere.’

St James Prep was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in October 2019 and graded ‘excellent’ in all areas.
