Job overview

We are looking for an inspiring and enthusiastic Head Librarian to join our British School Team from 1 September 2024.  This is a role that involves leading the British School librarian team, as well as managing the library itself, liaising closely with staff and teaching some classes to students.  The successful candidate will work with colleagues across both the Primary and Secondary divisions of our British School, and will join with the wider staff team to promote a love of learning, reading, and to support our whole school's continuing priority of improving student literacy. 


1. Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in library science, information science, or a related field. A master's degree in library science (MLS) or library and information studies (MLIS) is often preferred.
  • A recognised Teaching qualification that meets the requirements of your home-country (e.g. B.Ed, PGCE, GDE etc) - desirable


2. Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of library systems, cataloging, and classification principles.
  • Familiarity with various information resources, both print and digital, and experience with library technologies, such as integrated library systems and online databases.
  • Proficiency in information literacy instruction and research methodologies.
  • Excellent organizational and management skills to effectively maintain library resources, track circulation, and advise on library resource budgets.
  • Technological proficiency to integrate digital tools and resources into library services.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with teachers, students, and staff effectively.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and stay updated with emerging trends in library science.


3. Experience:

  • At least 5-years’ experience working within a library setting in an all-through and/or multi-programme school (desirable) 
  • Experience in providing reference and research assistance to students and staff.
  • Familiarity with library collection development and selection processes.


4. Passion for Education and Reading:

  • A genuine passion for fostering a love for reading and learning among students.
  • Enthusiasm for supporting the school's educational objectives and integrating library resources into the curriculum.
  • Ability to promote literacy programs and events that engage students and encourage reading for pleasure.


5. Flexibility and Adaptability:

  • The ability to adapt to the changing needs of the school and embrace new technologies and educational approaches.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic school environment.


6. Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Willingness to collaborate and work effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff members.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.


7. Professional Development:

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development by attending conferences, workshops, and staying updated on the latest trends in library science.

El  Alsson British and American International Schools NEW GIZA is a private international school offering the choice between British and American education. The British School follows both the English National Curriculum and the International Early Years & Primary Curriculum, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, IGCSE & GCSE and GCE and IAL qualifications for students from FS1 to Year 13. The school also teaches the Egyptian national curriculum for Arabic studies, Social studies and Religion. Children at El Alsson are happy and achieve high academic standards and are respectful to all and  be tolerant to those in the diverse community they live within.
