Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a happy, busy, successful and popular IAPS prep school that has a solid and distinctive position in the Lincolnshire education market.

St Hugh’s is very much a family school and has a strong sense of community.  It is known for its excellent teaching, its happy atmosphere, and its quality and breadth of education.  The school’s ethos is about treating each child as a true individual, with a can-do culture where success in any activity is recognised and celebrated.

There are 175 children aged 2 to 13 and the school operates a 5-day week with flexi-boarding from Monday to Thursday evenings.  Saturday school stopped last year, which has given everyone a much better work-life balance and makes the school more parent-friendly.

St Hugh’s has a strong academic record despite being non-selective at entry, and pupils go on to a broad range of first-division senior schools.  An ISI inspection in October graded every aspect of the school as “excellent”.   Pastoral care and extra-curricular breadth are also major strengths and the school is financially healthy, making good annual surpluses and with no borrowings.

The current Head, Chris Ward, is moving to another headship after six years at St Hugh’s and the Governors are seeking his successor.   You may be new to headship or you may not be, but you must be great with children and you must be excited and enthusiastic about helping them achieve as much as possible in a happy, stimulating and adventurous school.

An attractive reward package is offered, including 5-bedroom family accommodation.

Full details and an application form can be downloaded from this page or from the school website, www.st-hughs.lincs.sch.uk  where further information is available.

Our advising consultant, Simon Shneerson, will be happy to answer questions and to offer impartial and confidential advice before you apply.  His telephone number is 07986 100237 or he can be e-mailed at info@simonshneerson.com.

Closing date for applications: 11 am on Monday, 28th January
Longlist interviews: Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th February (choice of dates)
Shortlist interviews: Monday 4th March

St Hugh’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Vision and values

St Hugh’s School’s aim is to create happy, well-rounded children who are able to succeed academically and are considerate to the needs of others. Teachers strive to create a happy and stimulating environment, so each pupil can fulfil their potential not only academically but also spiritually, mentally and physically. They want to educate each pupil beyond the classroom and promote traditional values of courtesy, honesty, hard work, independence, unselfishness and responsibility.

Literacy and numeracy are a major focus for the school. However, pupils throughout the school also receive specialist training in Modern Languages, ICT, music, PE, science and swimming, plus Forest School activities.

ISI report

“Teaching is firmly based upon an understanding of the pupils’ needs and the way in which they learn, and the very best teaching involves pupils fully in their learning. Teachers are well qualified and have commitment, dedication and a huge enthusiasm for their teaching.”
