Job overview

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a thriving co-educational preparatory school for boys and girls aged four to 13 of some 270 children, including a residential choir school for the Choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral.

With a unique location in the heart of the City of London and a history that can be traced back to the 12th century, the school is fundamentally entwined with the Cathedral. Situated within the grounds of Wren’s masterpiece, the school respects time-honoured educational traditions while never forgetting its place in the modern, progressive world. It is a very special place with fabulous staff and exciting pupils.

The Governors seek to appoint a visionary, innovative leader who is committed to fostering a happy learning environment through a broad curriculum. With a mission of providing a first-class education that equips young people for life, not just for the next stage of their education, they will promote the values of kindness, justice, tolerance, respect, honesty and trust.

The Chapter of St Paul’s has taken the decision to establish, for the first time in 900 years, a second choir with female trebles equivalent in number and profile to the boys. It is intended that the female choristers will join the Cathedral choir by 2025. The new Head will have a strong record of achievement in educational management and a clear understanding of the commercial skills required to run an independent school at a pivotal time in its evolution.

A deep appreciation of the role that the school plays in the musical life of the world-renowned Cathedral choir, the ability to create and maintain an easy and mutually supportive relationship with the Cathedral, particularly with the Dean and the Director of Music, and full sympathy with the Christian mission and values of the Cathedral and its school will be essential.

This truly is a rare opportunity to lead a very distinctive school in a unique and stunning setting. St Paul’s Cathedral School undoubtedly has an exciting future ahead of it, and leading the management of change over the next few years will be an extremely rich and rewarding experience for the new Head.

About St Paul's Cathedral School

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a co-educational, Church of England, independent preparatory day school for around 250 children aged 4-13, located in the City of London. It has boarding provision for St Paul’s Cathedral boy choristers, who sing daily at the cathedral, from the age of seven. From September 2023, girl choristers have begun to sing in the cathedral.

The school is owned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral; its governing body is made up of five Canons and seven lay members, who are chaired by the Dean. St Paul's can trace its origins back to the 12th century and it existed for several centuries solely to educate the cathedral choristers. It has been co-educational since 2002.
