St Mary’s Calne is a member of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) and the Headmasters’ and Headmistress’ Conference (HMC); it is a leader in the field of girls’ independent boarding education.   It has around 365 girls aged 11-18, including 120+ girls in the Sixth Form.   As well as innovative teaching, learning and scholarship, St Mary’s Calne offers outstanding pastoral care and a vibrant, warm community.

Opportunity 

An exciting new role has been created within our outstanding Music Department.  The role of Head of Academic Music would suit an an experienced, enthusiastic and inspirational graduate, with outstanding inter-personal skills, who can lead and manage our excellent Music curriculum.  We would expect the successful candidate to be able to teach at all levels of the school, as well as taking the lead in overseeing and developing the broad ranging academic programme, which is a key element of the Music Department.

In addition, for the right aspirational candidate who would relish the prospect of further developing his/her experience, there is an opportunity to take on the role of Director of Music to cover a period of maternity leave.

The Music Department is based in a purpose built block which is well equipped with instruments, PCs, up to date teaching resources and a recording studio.  In addition to curriculum music, around 75% of pupils take individual instrument or singing lessons and there are currently around 30 Music and Choral Scholars.  

Music holds an important place at the heart of St Mary’s Calne featuring prominently in events such as Confirmation, Carol Service and Founders’ Day.  The department works to develop individual talents, while seeking to bring the whole community together through music.  Each year there is a vigorous programme of concerts and events and a number of collaborations with other prestigious institutions regularly feature.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be able to join us in April 2020, though a start date in September 2020 would also be an option.

• University Graduate in Music

• A well-qualified, experienced and inspiring Music teacher with a track record of success who is able to teach curriculum music from Year 7 to A Level  

• Willingness to collaborate effectively with other members of staff and Departments

• Excellent communication skills  

• Motivation to work with young people 

• Positive attitude and approach to change and development 

• Willingness to participate in and expectation of contribution to the wider life of a boarding school and extra-curricular life

• The ability to tutor girls and be pastorally aware of their needs 

• As part of the role of Director of Music (maternity cover) the ability to rehearse and direct the Chamber Choir and Orchestra to an exceptional standard is desirable

About St Mary's Calne

St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.

Founded in 1873, the school has been providing an outstanding education for girls for 150 years, and our alumnae have prominent positions in every profession from the law, politics and medicine to the arts, drama and sport. ISI May 2017:  Under the new ISI framework in both quality of Pupil Achievement and Pupil Development St Mary’s was awarded the highest possible grade – Excellent.  In addition, St Mary’s was found to be robustly compliant with all the ISI statutory standards in the Focused Compliance Inspection.
