Job overview

Ackworth School, a co-educational boarding and day school, was founded in 1779 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). It maintains its ethos and traditions, and is still governed by the Society, although only a small number of pupils are from the Quaker tradition. The school is academically non-selective and provides an excellent range of facilities and extra-curricular opportunities. The Head is a member of both HMC and the Society of Heads.

We are looking for an expert in their field; a true autism specialist, to manage our Autism Resource. The Resource is contained within the main senior school but is run as a separate entity. Demand for places is high due to the specialist nature of the setting. Many of our pupils access mainstream lessons and some are solely educated within the resource, dependent on their needs. All have the benefit of one to one support at all times.

The ideal candidate may hold a similar post currently, or a broader role as SENco. Either way, you will have in-depth knowledge of working with pupils with ASC and be an inspirational leader, able to bring together a team of supportive staff in a setting that is a rare find amongst specialist provisions.

As a boarding school we expect all of our teaching staff to embrace activities in the wider school and contribute to these areas outside of their department.

In return we offer:

• a competitive salary and generous fee remission of up to 50% for the children of our staff.

• all food and refreshments during the working day.

• access to sports facilities, new fitness suite and pool.

• free on-site parking.

• flexible pension and health benefits.

• generous levels of non-contact time

• small class sizes

• 34 teaching weeks

• a supportive and friendly environment based on the Quaker ethos of the school.

• a committed parent community which plays an active part in the school.

• a beautiful working location in an ideal location within easy travelling distance of the main centres of Sheffield, Leeds, Doncaster and York.

Applications should be sent to for the attention of the Head, Anton Maree to: jobs@ackworthschool.com. Applications must be submitted on a school or TES application form with a covering letter of no more than one side of A4.

Closing Date: Friday 24th February 2023 at 9.00am.

Shortlisted candidates will be advised by Monday 27th February and references requested the day after.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 2nd March 2023

Applicants should read carefully the Recruitment, Selection and Disclosure Policy. Our recruitment privacy notice is also available on our website within “Working For Us”.

Ackworth School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all applicants will undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and an enhanced DBS and Barred list check with Disclosure and Barring Service. Applicants should also be in sympathy with the School’s Quaker ethos.

For an informal and confidential discussion, please contact Jon Phillips on 01977 233600.

For over 240 years we have maintained a passion for exceptional learning and teaching that is non-selective and without judgment of the individual.

Quaker values underpin all that happens on a daily basis in our school community, with an emphasis on acceptance and quiet reflection. ‘Non sibi sed omnibus’, meaning ‘not for oneself but for all’, lies at the heart of school life alongside the Quaker testimonies of simplicity, truth, equality, peace and sustainability. An inherent respect for others and honesty at all times creates a calm, friendly school atmosphere which is supportive and reassuring for young people. Students are encouraged to think creatively, act ethically and with responsibility.

What makes us different?

Set in the beautiful heart of Yorkshire, within easy reach of major UK cities and transport routes, Ackworth School is a place for:

Growth

Ackworth is an all-through school for children, aged two-and-a-half to nineteen years. This stability throughout their educational journey gives pupils outstanding continuity and the opportunity to forge lifelong friendships, creating an environment for increased academic focus and confidence.

Achievement

With an emphasis on individual goal setting and encouragement, the learning journey at Ackworth School enables students to realise outstanding results, often beyond expectation, whilst remaining attentive to the needs of others. When they leave, they are equipped to lead a fulfilled and responsible adult life.

Support

We devote equal time to supporting pupils’ growth and emotional development as to their academic development. We believe that happiness and fulfilment are an integral part of a child’s educational progression.

Peace

Peace is one of the Quaker testimonies, part of everything we do. Whilst most in our community, whether staff or pupils, are from a non-Quaker background, these relevant principles set the foundations for a life based on the belief that every member of the community has equal value.
