Head of Biology Department (with teaching to IGCSE and AS/A-Level) to start as soon as possible

The position

St. Lawrence College, Athens, Greece is currently seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced Biology specialist teacher to lead the senior school Biology Department in addition to teaching IGCSE and AS/A-Level Biology to pupils in Key Stages 4 & 5.

Brief Job description

The successful candidate will lead a department of hard working and innovative professionals to sustain and advance the variety of teaching strategies that have propelled our Biology department into being among the most dynamic and popular at St. Lawrence College, and the largest provider of IGCSE/A-Level Biology in Greece.

Through the employment of field trips, in-laboratory experiments and online resources in addition to class teaching, the Head of Department will inspire his/her staff by example and ensure that the curiosity and enthusiasm shown by pupils are challenged and rewarded at IGCSE and A-Level, guaranteeing the teaching that pupils receive acts as an appropriate springboard to the many subject-related degrees that our pupils pursue at UK universities and elsewhere.

Our new Head of Biology will keep firmly abreast with developments in Key Stages 4 and 5 Biology. He/She will work closely with senior management to ensure departmental staff have appropriate subject-related CPD, in addition to the guidance and observational advice he/she provides to colleagues.

Above all, the new Head of Biology will ensure the maintenance of a safe, inclusive, child-centred approach to Biology at our school, where lessons are always underpinned by a desire for best learning, shared by teachers and pupils.

St. Lawrence College places great importance on the excellence of the delivery of pastoral care and on the provision of extracurricular activities for all pupils. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to these vital spheres of British education fully and with enthusiasm.

Brief person specification

In addition to appropriate teaching qualifications and experience teaching Biology through to A-Level in a British school either in the UK or overseas, the successful applicant will possess outstanding subject knowledge, excellent communication skills and the stamina to realise the continual improvement of the teaching of this highly popular subject.

Previous experience of leading a department is not essential – more importantly the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a vison for the teaching of Biology that can be shared with and will inspire colleagues within the department.

The successful applicant will be available to work as soon as possible and, at the latest, from January 1st 2017.

Remuneration

Our new Head of Department will receive a very competitive salary by standards of British education in Greece plus Christmas, Easter and summer bonuses as well as other benefits. The successful applicant will work among excellent purpose-built laboratories in a 17-acre school campus set in the stunning natural surroundings of the suburbs in southern Athens.
