The Governors of this exceptional Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Head of Biology for April or September 2023. The post is full-time and is a permanent post. The ability to teach GCSE and A-level Biology is essential. A strong degree in Biology is sought, although candidates with a degree in a closely related discipline are welcome to apply.
The Science department at WKGS has 12 fully equipped laboratories, four of which have been recently renovated. All students study separate sciences from Year 7. At GCSE, students choose to study either AQA separate science or combined science and follow a two-year KS4. Currently, in Y12 there are four A-level Biology groups, with another four groups in the current Y13. A-level students also follow the AQA specification, they have twelve 50-minute lessons per fortnight, and classes are usually shared between two teachers.
Students achieve excellent results, with 50% of GCSE Biology students achieving a grade 8 or 9, and 56% of A-level Biology students achieving A*-B grades in 2022. There are numerous additional activities offered and the department runs a variety of trips each year, along with organising visiting speakers, in order to enhance and develop each students’ learning experience.
West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a coeducational Sixth Form. There are over 1200 students on roll and our results are outstanding. In 2022, a Progress 8 score of +0.49 was achieved and 60% of results were at grades 9-7, with 20% of all grades being at grade 9. At A-level, 68% of grades were A*-B with the average grade achieved being a B.

Staff are offered holistic therapy and use of the fitness suite as part of a well-being programme. The award of the National Healthy Schools’ Standard recognised the good work and the importance given to healthy living.
The vision for the school as a Science College is to be a centre of excellence on the Wirral and for Science and Mathematics teaching and learning. The school aims to raise overall standards from an already extremely high level in Science and Mathematics and across the whole curriculum at all Key Stages and to contribute to enhanced standards in Science and Mathematics in partner schools.
