Job overview

The Head of Boys’ Games will work closely with the Director of Sport to deliver an exciting programme of sport for all children at King’s from Reception to Year 8. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a strategic development programme for boys’ sport at the School.

The Role

Key responsibilities

  • To work in full support of the Director of Sport to successfully lead the Boys’ Games Department and to deliver the programme within the curriculum and Schemes of Work.
  • To contribute to a strategic plan for the future of boys’ games at King’s and to work with the Director of Sport on the strategic development of sport at the School.
  • To effectively coordinate the day-to-day running of boys’ sport.
  • To ensure an extensive and well-balanced fixture schedule for boys’ sport, ensuring that fixtures are planned correctly within School guidelines and in adherence to School policies.
  • To initiate small sporting tours for Years 7 and 8.
  • To work closely with the Director of Sport and Deputy Head (Teaching and Learning) towards the development of potential sports scholarship candidates.
  • To promote sport and encourage participation across the board, regardless of ability.
  • To work as part of the Sports’ Team in the hosting of tournaments and in the delivery of School Sports’ Days.
  • To ensure key information (such as team sheets and fixture information) is available to parents and staff in good time.
  • To undertake other duties appropriate to the general purpose of the position that may be reasonably assigned by the Head or Director of Sport to make a full and active contribution to the extra-curricular life of the school.
  • To keep up to date with current coaching practices and innovations in teaching methods in all sport, as appropriate,
  • To undertake appropriate training to keep up to date with current practices pertinent to this role.
  • To display an example of excellence as a dynamic teaching practitioner and to inspire and motivate other staff.
  • To attend tournaments and sports tours after school hours and very occasionally at weekends, throughout the year.
  • To seek opportunities for engagement with other schools and competitions.
  • To raise the profile of King’s, both on and off the pitch.


Person specification

The person appointed will have the necessary experience and qualifications. A particular interest in teaching rugby is desirable; strength in hockey would also be beneficial.  Good oral and written standards will be expected as well as efficient administrative skills.

A sense of humour, the ability to remain calm in challenging situations and excellent interpersonal skills are all essential. The ability to work as part of a team is crucial.


Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to teach rugby/hockey/cricket to boys of all ages
  • A breadth of experience of classroom teaching with the ability to deliver excellent lessons
  • Approachable, committed, enthusiastic, motivated, calm, well-organised
  • Knowledge of a variety of effective teaching and learning techniques
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills in planning and delivery of a bespoke and very creative curriculum
  • A high level of ICT competence
  • Open and responsive to new ideas
  • Willing to work as part of a team
  • Willing to play an active part in the School community
  • An understanding of, and acceptance and commitment to, the principles underlying equal opportunities


Desirable

  • Strength in rugby would be an advantage.
  • Experience of working in a Prep School environment
  • Umpiring and coaching qualifications
  • Playing experience in competitive sport
  • To offer additional teaching subjects
