Job overview

Lancaster University School of Mathematics

Head of Chemistry

Chemistry is currently only taken by a small proportion of LUSoM students, and hence there will only be one teaching post for Chemistry at the school, the Head of Chemistry role. We recognise that the post will involve curriculum design, developing extension and outreach tasks, and being accountable for the results of the students, all of which are traditionally done by a Head of Department.

Lancaster University School of Mathematics is a centre of excellence for the teaching and learning of mathematics, and to provide opportunities for students with an interest and aptitude for mathematics, especially for those from backgrounds currently under-represented in the mathematical sciences. The school benefits from the first bespoke-built mathematics school building in the country, and hence there are first-class facilities available to use and promote our mission. We aim to work with students and teachers in other schools to promote deeper understanding and greater enjoyment of mathematics as well as higher attainment in qualifications, leading to greater participation in mathematics at advanced levels.

We welcome applications for this post to commence end of August 2023.

About Lancaster University School of Mathematics

Lancaster University School of Mathematics, run by the Rigby Education Trust, in partnership with Lancaster University and Cardinal Newman College.

A sixth form community where talented mathematicians can excel. It recruits the brightest and most talented 16-19 year old maths pupils from across Lancashire, whatever their background, and brings them into an inclusive community of other exceptional pupils.

Based close to Cardinal Newman College in Preston, we provide an intellectually stimulating and challenging curriculum along with high-quality resources for 16-19 year olds who love maths. Students receive exceptional teaching, first-class facilities, and a high-quality enrichment programme that encourages the practical application of maths and brings in industry experts to the classroom.

For some school pupils, being naturally gifted in maths and science subjects can set them apart for the wrong reasons. A specialist Maths School brings together these talented individuals and creates a vibrant community where they are actively encouraged to explore the subjects they love. The curriculum is extended beyond the standard Maths A-level to provide a stretching and inspiring education delivered by the Maths School staff, members of Lancaster University and Cardinal Newman College.
