Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced A Level Teacher to join a well-established and well-resourced Science team, leading the Chemistry department and GCSE Science for September 2022. There are currently four teachers in the Science team and a shared laboratory technician. In the teaching and learning, we prioritise the understanding of scientific concepts and the ability of each student to apply these to real-world scenarios. Many of our A Level science students move on to STEM subjects or medicine at university and there is an emphasis on preparing students with the knowledge and practical skills required to be successful in higher education. Each teaching group has one lesson per day and support outside of lesson time is regarded as an essential supplement. Extracurricular and extension activities are actively encouraged. The ability to offer KS4 Biology would be a significant advantage.

Hurtwood House is one of England’s most exciting and successful schools, specialising exclusively in the Sixth Form. We have an impressive academic record, a reputation for preparing students successfully for higher education and are renowned for the quality of our pastoral care. A culture of high expectations, creativity and professionalism permeates the school and we encourage students and staff to work in partnership to achieve the academic and personal outcomes that are important to us.

Hurtwood House has its own generous salary scale and benefits – our staff are welcome to join students in the first class dining facilities for three meals a day, car parking is free and there is a staff wellbeing programme, comprising in-school sessions and membership of the local leisure centre and its facilities. Many of our teachers become involved in managing boarding house life for an additional allowance. We are a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

Closing date: Friday 4 February 2022

(Interviews will take place in the week beginning 21 February 2022)

Values and vision

Hurtwood House aims to be ‘the most exciting school in England’. It is driven by a passion for creativity and academic excellence. The school aims to combine the best elements of the traditional boarding school system with the best elements of the modern sixth form college to create what it believes is a wholly unique and individual establishment. While breaking new ground educationally, the school believes it has retained traditional values and has created an inspirational but safe stepping-stone between school and university.

The secondary school is driven by a passion for creativity and a respect for academic rigour. It is a small independent school with a distinctive voice, which is less formal and less institutional than traditional public schools.
