We are looking for an exceptional subject specialist to lead our highly successful Classics department from September 2020. The role is an excellent opportunity for a teacher with some leadership experience or an experienced Head of Department looking for a fresh challenge.
The Classics Department consists of four teachers (plus the Headmaster) who collaborate closely to develop teaching and learning strategies and resources. We aim to support students of all abilities in achieving their full potential. The department has expanded in recent years and this would be an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to develop it still further.
All our pupils study Latin in Years 7-8; many choose to carry on in Year 9, and around 25-30 subsequently opt for the GCSE each year. A combined ‘Gratin’ course has recently been added as a Year 9 and GCSE option, enabling able linguists to take both Latin and Greek at GCSE. At A-Level both Latin and Classical Civilisation are offered, with 3-5 opting for each subject most years; aspiring university classicists are given extension classes.
Recent public examination results have been strong: across 2018 and 2019 combined, 74% of our GCSE students (Eduqas board) achieved grade 8 or 9, and 57% of our A-Level Latin and Classical Civilisation students achieved grade A or A*. Colfeians regularly go on to study Classics (or related courses) at university.
The department organises trips (e.g. Bath, Italy, Greece) and visits to London museums, theatre productions and lecture days. It also runs a programme of Latin classes for students in our Lewisham Partner schools, who are entered for WJEC Level 1 or 2 certificates as appropriate.
