Head of Classics Teacher (Maternity Cover) 0.76 from January 2018 

Queen Mary’s is looking for a well-qualified, inspirational and dynamic candidate to lead and manage the development of Classics in this thriving school. We seek to appoint someone who is passionate about Classics who will convey enthusiasm for the subject throughout the School. A willingness to contribute to the wider school community and extra-curricular activities is essential. The role is 0.76

The Head of Classics responsibilities:

· To support Queen Mary’s Christian ethos and exemplify the highest professional standards 

· To be an inspiring, first class teacher who fosters a love of learning and nurtures the well- being of all in their care

· To lead and share strategies for effective teaching across a wide range of ages and abilities 

· To have the leadership skills and commitment to aid the professional development of the Classics Department

· To possess passion for Classics and implement effectively new initiatives in order to improve academic standards 

· To ensure that School and Departmental policies are implemented and monitored within the Classics Department

· To adopt a strategic approach to the development of the Department in accordance with the School Development Plan

· To take responsibility for the Classics Departmental Handbook in accordance with the requirements for ISI inspection

· To hold regular departmental meetings and to attend the Head of Department forum chaired by the Director of Studies 

· To take part in the School’s appraisal system

· To monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the Classics Department

· To work effectively with the Data Manager, Head of Support for Learning and Director of Studies in regard to monitoring pupil progress

· To produce termly reports and half term grades to be distributed to parents and students

· To take responsibility for setting and the internal examinations for the Classics Department including scholarship papers

· To be responsible for marking and collating the results for all scholarship candidates

· To provide extra tuition for students preparing to sit external entrance examinations 

· To make informed decisions in regard to the choice of examination board and syllabuses at GCSE

· To prepare the external examination entries in liaison with the Examination Officer

· To work with the Director of Studies and the Deputy Head in regard to timetable allocation for the Classics Department

· To effectively manage the Classics Department budget

· To attend INSET, Staff Briefings, Open Mornings, Parents’ Meetings, School Prayers and any other events as deemed appropriate by the Head

· To be an excellent tutor

· To undertake pastoral duties as deemed appropriate by the Deputy Head

· To undertake any other duties as requested by the Head

Owned by the Woodard Corporation, Queen Mary's School is an all girls’ independent boarding and day school situated in beautiful countryside, close to Thirsk and the Hambleton Hills. Junction 49 of the A1 is about 2 miles away. Founded in 1925, the school was originally situated at Duncombe Park, but moved to its present site in 1985. Baldersby Park, the School's current home, is a Grade 1 listed building surrounded by 40 acres of landscaped grounds, sports fields and paddocks. 

We have a Reception and pre-prep department (currently one form entry in each year group) but the main School is for girls only and spans the age range 7 to 16. While we prepare a few girls for Common Entrance at 11, 12 and 13+, most girls stay on and do GCSE with us, before moving to new schools and colleges for the sixth form. 

The School has a strong boarding tradition but we have an increasing number of day girls and those who board one or two nights each week.
