This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding specialist in the field of Classics to take a leading role in the strategic planning and delivery of Classics throughout our highly successful School.
As Head of Classics, you will have overall responsibility for the professional leadership and management of the Classics department in order to ensure high standards of teaching and learning are delivered.
You will be committed to teaching Latin with Classical Civilisation from Years 7 to 9, Latin at GCSE and A Level, and Classical Civilisation at A Level. The ability to deliver Ancient Greek to GCSE would be an advantage but is not essential.
Classics at Streatham & Clapham High School
The Classics Department is well stocked with texts and resources to support study at all levels of the curriculum. The Department has two dedicated rooms: a sixth-form room and a lower-school teaching room, with digital information displays in both.
From Year 7 to Year 9 the girls follow the Cambridge Latin course and complete Book 3 by the end of their third year at school. The girls are also provided with a taster of Greek, involving the alphabet, transliteration and simple present tense translation at Key Stage 3. At GCSE, OCR Latin and Greek courses are offered as separate options, making use of John Taylor and Henry Cullen’s two-part courses. The Sixth Form currently follows the A Level OCR courses in both Latin and Classical Civilisation, with Greek to be offered as an examined subject in the future.
Pupils participate in a number of Classics trips and competitions throughout the year. Lower-school pupils attend a weekly Classics club at lunch-times and in the School’s weekly ‘Kinza’ (enrichment) programme, and a busy schedule of theatre trips and lectures is provided for all years. There is also an annual Year 9 trip to Bath to support CLC Book 3.
