About the role

The core purpose of this Head of Computing & ICT role post is to commit to excellence at The Heathland School. Central to our mission statement is our firm belief that students learn best within a secure, well-disciplined learning environment that provides a broad and balanced curriculum. We challenge our students to become ambitious learners who strive for excellence and the highest levels of achievement across all school life.

This post is important to the subject outcomes of our pupils and their continuing success. Teachers are the driving force behind subject development and hence, impact widely on the academic outcomes of the School. The successful candidate will be line managed by a senior leader.

Teachers must reflect and be positive thinkers and be able to identify methods in which teaching and learning can be enhanced, across all phases. It is expected that the successful candidate will consistently plan and deliver lessons to an expected standard within the department.

At Key Stage 3, pupils have access to child-friendly programming software, as well as textual programming (Python). However, more traditional ICT topics, such as database and spreadsheet, and more multi-media-based topics, such as web design or animation, are also covered.

Each year around 50 pupils study GCSE courses in Computer Science. In addition to this, we also offered iMedia to Year 10 & Year 11. At A level over 20 students complete the OCR GCE in Computer Science.

Lunch clubs are well attended and the use of Microsoft Teams has meant we can offer students a much broader range of enrichment tasks. These include radio shows/podcasts, lectures, competitions and challenges.

The department recognises that Computer Science is a growth industry and supports students in gaining work experience or accessing university summer schools. There are computer giants such as CISCO on our doorstep who offer an excellent education programme to local students.

We are looking for an innovative and forward–looking individual who can inspire students and contribute fully to building confidence, encouraging pupils to come out of their comfort zone, academic rigour and a curiosity for this subject.

Professional Development

Our staff are important to us. We know that without great staff, our children will not be as successful. Therefore, professional development is key to our success, we grow, develop and nurture our staff. We have a wide variety of in house and external professional learning and development
