Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspirational Head of Computing who is passionate about teaching and learning and is dedicated to achieving excellence for all.

Leaders across the school play a crucial role in planning a curriculum that is ambitious for students of all abilities. The impact is that all groups of students, including those with SEND, achieve their best. Middle and senior leaders also play a significant role in contributing to whole school improvement.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone wanting to take additional responsibility for Computing. You should already have demonstrated excellent leadership and management skills, be committed to inclusion and the well-being of every child and be an outstanding role model in your own professional practice.

Candidates must provide leadership and direction for the department and ensure that it is managed and organised to meet school and subject aims and objectives. To provide professional leadership to secure high quality teaching and learning, effective use of resources, improving standards of achievement for all students, and the promotion of students’ personal development and well-being.

The Head of Computing will play a key role in supporting, guiding and motivating teachers of the subject, evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning, the subject curriculum and progress towards targets for students and staff in order to inform future priorities for the subject. The policy and practice of monitoring within a department provides the information for evaluation and action. The Head of Computing identifies needs in the department and recognises that these needs must be considered in relation to the overall needs of the school. It is also important they understand how their role contributes to school priorities and to the overall education and achievement of all students.

Throughout their work, they will ensure that practices improve the quality of education provided, meet the needs and aspirations of all students and help to continue to raise standards of achievement in the school.

What we offer:

•    An outstanding track record at GCSE, BTEC and A level

•    An inclusive school underpinned by our CARE values

•    Students who actively engage in lessons and have excellent attitudes to learning

•    Extensive professional development. We are the lead school for the Harrow Collegiate Alliance and work closely with other High Schools and Colleges in Harrow

•    Staff wellbeing activities each week, e.g. mindfulness along with staff sports and clubs

•    One of the best sites in London, located on the greenbelt next to Bentley Priory and set in 27 acres of woodland and fields, providing and exceptional learning environment

We continue to celebrate hugely successful GCSE and A Level results. The hard work of the students and staff alike has led to these great GCSE achievements:

•    12% of all grades were 9 compared with 6.6% nationally

•    47% of all grades were the highest levels of 9-7

•    71% of all students achieved 9-5 including English and Maths

•    95% achieving EBacc

Over a third of A Level grades resulted in an A or A* grade, enabling many students to secure a place into their first-choice universities.

Tours of the school are strongly encouraged, please contact the school office to arrange a tour and do visit our school website and prospectus to find out more about the school and the role.

Note: The job you are applying for is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) which requires you to disclose all spent convictions and cautions except those which are ‘protected’ under Police Act 1997 – Part V and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) and are not subject to disclosure to employers on DBS certificates and cannot be taken into account.

If you are invited to interview you will be required to complete a “Disclosure of Criminal Record” form and bring the completed form to interview. The School is committed to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and safeguarding checks will be undertaken prior to appointment including digital screening. This role involves engaging in regulated activity relevant to children and all staff have safeguarding responsibilities.

Ofsted Report

Bentley Wood was inspected by Ofsted on 14th and 15th November 2023. This was the school’s first inspection since we were graded as Outstanding in May 2012. I am delighted to inform you that we have been graded as Outstanding once again.

The opening line of this written report truly encapsulates what is it like to attend Bentley Wood High School. The Inspectors wrote:

‘Pupils develop into confident and caring young people at this school. The school sets high expectations for both behaviour and achievement. Pupils demonstrate exceptional behaviour and focus well in the classroom. They are respectful towards each other and their teachers, and understand the importance of positive attitudes. This is underpinned by the school’s values of CARE: communication, achievement, respect and empathy, which are embraced by the school community’

There has been a lot of hard work to maintain this ‘outstanding’ judgement, and we are so happy that the dedication of our staff, the support of our parents and the commitment and encouragement of our governors has been recognised. Here is the link to the report published on the Ofsted website.
