Job overview

We are looking for a qualified and experienced teacher to join Wyvern St Edmund’s Academy as Head of Department for Geography.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of teaching excellence. Experience of leading and delivering on an additional responsibility would be an advantage.

Our collective vision of helping each student to develop into the best version of themselves is at the heart of everything we do and motivates us to provide impactful teaching, comprehensive pastoral care and extensive extra-curricular provision.

New staff joining the school can be assured of a warm, supportive environment along with excellent professional opportunities for all staff and a strong sense of shared vision and ethos: we help our students to become the best version of themselves in order to serve others.

Within the Geography Department, we share the same vision as the Royal Geographical Society: “Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. Its hands on, relevant, and fun.”

Students will experience awe and wonder when exploring a range of engaging topics and an understanding of how physical and human features were formed or created. By instilling a deep interest in our world, students will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to manage and care for our world in a sustainable way.

Wyvern St Edmund's (WSE) is situated on the eastern outskirts of Salisbury with beautiful views over the Laverstock Downs to the east and Salisbury Cathedral to the southwest. WSE is a founding member of Magna Learning Partnership.

In September 2022 we legally opened as Wyvern St Edmund's Academy, enabling us to take full advantage of the benefits associated with inclusive coeducational learning and social development. Wyvern College and St Edmund's Girls' School were formally two separate schools, just a few yards apart. Over the past 15 years the schools have worked closely together, sharing expertise and staffing resources.

Facilities and teachers are now fully and legally merged to create a large, mixed, setting of approximately 1350 students. We currently have a 'Good' OFSTED rating. Our collective vision of helping each student to develop into the best version of themselves is at the heart of everything we do and motivates us to provide impactful teaching, comprehensive pastoral care and extensive extra-curricular provision. Moreover, our vision is rooted in Christian beliefs and values whereby we expect our students to use their developing gifts, talents and character to serve others in the local community and beyond (1 Peter 4:10).

We have high expectations of student attainment and similarly we expect much from our staff. We are aiming for outstanding provision in all areas and this appointment is a key factor in ensuring that we achieve that ambition.

Our students are delightful; they embrace learning opportunities and respond well to challenge. They appreciate the very positive working relationships they have with their teachers and other staff who support them. In turn, our staff go the extra mile to help students achieve beyond expectations. Our reputation in the local community is soundly based upon the value we add to our students from the point at which they join us until their departure for sixth forms and colleges in the local area.

We have a close and positive relationship with Salisbury Sixth From College (S6C) which is a short drive away from WSE. Our partnership with the college means that there are opportunities to work collaboratively with KS5 students and teachers.
