The School of Law has two organisational units: the Department of Law and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). Established in 1965 the Department has a well-established reputation for innovative work in social policy, doctrine and theory. Key research areas include human rights, state crime, immigration, policing and criminal justice, feminist legal studies, labour law, environmental law and climate justice, practical ethics, private law and social theory. As one of the largest law schools in the UK, it provides high quality teaching to more than 1,000 undergraduate students.

The Role

Queen Mary University of London is seeking to appoint a new Head of Department and Professor of Law to build on the Department’s success and reputation as a key influencer in the critique, development and application of Law. The post holder will have the opportunity to devise and deliver an ambitious strategy to develop the Department’s world class teaching, student experience and research output. The Head of Department will play a leading role in managing key stakeholder relationships and cultivating international networks and partners. The position will start from 1 September 2023 and run for a limited term of 5 years (renewable) alongside a permanent professorial appointment. On completion of the Headship the postholder will then move to as substantive professorial role on an indefinite, full time basis.

The position is based at the Mile End campus. The professorial salary will be competitive and commensurate with the experience and academic standing of the post holder. The Head of Department position attracts an additional responsibility allowance.

Candidates will possess proven academic leadership and management experience and be able to demonstrate strategic vision. The successful candidate will have a significant track record of internationally recognised research in their designated field, and credibility in leading the educational provision and experience for our students.. The appointee will also have the ability to manage and develop effective working relationships with all staff and display a strong commitment to fostering an ambitious and inclusive environment.
