Department: DIS Secondary School
Reports to:  Senior Leadership Team

The Science department at DIS sparks curiosity in our students. We support inquisitive, investigative, and enquiry pedagogy.  We teach students how to analytically think to find explanations to everyday questions.

The department currently consists of 13 full-time members of staff and 2 member of support staff.  Most teachers will teach at Key Stage 3, 4, and 5 occasionally spanning in two or three subject areas.

Our staff teach general Science at Key Stage 3 and then focus on Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology in Key Stage 4 and 5.  British curriculum is followed at Key Stage 3 to 4 then IB at Key Stage 5.

Facilities include 6 wet laboratories and 1 dry but we look forward to welcoming a new addition of 3 wet laboratories opening in July 2017. Resources are ample at the school and many specialty items (especially for the IB syllabus) are available.

The students at DIS are truly a pleasure to teach with many accolades obtained locally and globally.  We are privileged to have students of many different cultures and backgrounds cohesively working together to question and discuss scientific issues worldwide.

The Head of Department of Science will carry out the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Duties:

The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered in the Teacher job description and the employment contract. It may be modified by the Principal, upon mutual agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title.

Departmental

  • Work in conjunction with the school’s strategic plan in moving the school forward.
  • Carry out data analysis and chart student progress.
  • Incorporate Gifted and Talented into your department.
  • Carry out departmental appraisals and ‘Learning Walks’ with SMT.
  • Contribute to School Self Evaluation.
  • To be able to lead across the whole school.
  • Ensure all department members act in a professional manner in and out of the classroom.

Additional Responsibilities:

To lead by example:

  • Demonstrating teaching skills which lead to excellent results and outcomes.
  • Demonstrating excellent and innovative pedagogical practice.
  • Contributing significantly, where appropriate, to implementing workplace policies and practice and promoting collective responsibility for their implementation.
  • Contributing to the professional development of colleagues through coaching and mentoring, demonstrating effective practice, and providing advice and feedback.
  • Staying up-to-date with current teaching strategies/methodologies, NC developments etc.

Administration Duties:

  • Curriculum management and review.
  • Teaching and learning development and monitoring.
  • Professional development within department.
  • Transition across year groups and from primary to secondary.
  • Monitoring pupil progress.
  • Report checking and monitoring.
  • Pupil discipline.
  • Cross-curricular development.
  • Teacher allocation, rooming etc.
  • Department ‘budget’, resources etc.
  • Contribute to the school newsletter.
  • Update school website.
