Job overview

Crosfields wishes to appoint a Head of Design & Technology who can lead, support, and promote the teaching of Design & Technology across the Senior School.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Situated in over forty acres, Crosfields currently educates boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 16. An exceptionally friendly school,

Crosfields emphasises manners, kindness, and good behaviour. The children benefit from a vast range of opportunities provided by committed and talented staff enhanced by facilities which are second to none. Though they are taught broadly, the children are also taught thoroughly, preparing them for the challenges that await inside and outside of school and laying the foundations for the adults they will become.

ABOUT THE POSITION

This is an exciting time to join the school as we expand our provision with the ambitious ‘Crosfields to 16’ project. We added our first Year 9 to the school in the 2021-22 academic year, with Year 10 to be added in 2022-23 and Year 11 in 2023-24. Along with a new, modern building to accommodate new year groups, several ancillary projects will also be taking place to facilitate Key Stage 4 teaching.

The Design & Technology department currently has one, well resourced, workshop. There will be a second workshop built specifically for GCSE teaching for September 2022. The post holder would be involved in the design, planning, and resourcing of this new space.

The successful candidate will have a pivotal role in the introduction of GSCE Design & Technology to the school. The current team consists of a Junior School Design & Technology lead and two Design & Technology Technicians and the post holder would work closely with these colleagues. The ideal candidate will be flexible. They would be able to lead Design & Technology throughout the senior school, including coordinating internal and national Design & Technology initiatives such as the Arkwright Scholarship, organising trips or visits related to Design & Technology, as well as running a Design & Technology club during a lunch time or during after school activities. As an expanding school, we would expect other positions of responsibility to become available for the right candidate.

It is expected that the candidates will enjoy contributing to the whole life of the school, that they are a form teacher, would be involved in whole school initiatives, contribute to the activities programme, and attend residential trips. Those with experience in senior school activities such as DofE, MUN or HPQ/EPQ are strongly encouraged to apply.

Crosfields School is a co-educational, independent day school for pupils aged 3 to 16. Located near Reading, Berkshire, it accommodates approximately 625 pupils.

Founded in 1957, the school is now run as a charitable trust under a single governing body.  In 2021 the school created two distinct areas, the Junior School which encompasses all year groups from Nursery to Year 6, and the Senior School for Years 7 to 11.  New for the 2021/22 academic year is a brand new Senior School building which provides an excellent setting for older students as the school extends to 16 and it will enjoy its first cohort of GCSE students in 2023.

Vision and values

First and foremost, the school aims to create an environment where every child is safe, happy and supported. It strives to offer a curriculum that is varied enough to allow every unique individual to discover their talents. Teachers encourage children to put in the effort and be resilient. They hope to give pupils the ability to be independent thinkers who challenge and enquire.

Numeracy and ICT skills are especially good at this school, along with reading.  Creative subjects such as design and technology and art are another focus. The curriculum as a whole gives pupils experience in linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological and social areas, as well as physical education.  Extra-curricular activities range from golf and fencing to Forest School and chess.  School trips are also organised to broaden pupils’ horizons.

ISI report

“Pupils throughout the school develop very good skills across different subjects and the school prepares them very well indeed for the next stage of their education. The curriculum, together with an excellent range of extra-curricular activities, trips and visits, supports pupils’ learning extremely well.”
