Job overview

We seek to appoint an outstanding candidate to lead the ongoing development of our Drama department. The Head of Drama position is a full-time post which becomes available due to the retirement of the current postholder. The Head of Drama delivers Drama lessons to classes in Years 3 to 8 and leads our exciting programme of performances and enrichment activities. The postholder leads colleagues who teach in the department and line manages the Speech and Drama peripatetic teacher. Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified candidates who are willing to make a significant contribution to the life of this busy, exciting and successful school.

The Drama department is a considerable strength of the school, teaching pupils vital communication and social skills, providing them with the opportunity to creatively express themselves and to gain insights to the world around them.

Pupils have a dedicated 55 minute Drama lesson each week in our specialist Drama Studio. They also benefit from extra curricular drama activities which form part of our after-school programme. Each year, all pupils in Years 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 perform on stage to an audience. Pupils in Year 7 work on the St Faith’s Arts Award which is a cross curricular creative arts project. Visits to professional theatre productions are organised annually. In addition, children have the opportunity to attend Speech and Drama lessons with our peripatetic teacher and work towards New Era examinations. Pupils at St Faith’s derive great enjoyment from Drama and achieve highly in this aspect of the curriculum. Each year we support pupils applying for Drama scholarships at senior schools and enjoy a high success rate.

Pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 have recently worked on productions including ‘The Button Box’, short pantomimes and Greek myths. Pupils have rehearsed in class groups before joining together for whole year group showcase events. Recent whole year group productions for pupils in Years 6 and 8 have included: ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘The Lion King’, and ‘Matilda’. The Creative Arts Faculty work collaboratively on these feature productions; pupils learn musical parts with Music specialist teachers and design sets, costumes and programmes with guidance from our team of Art teachers.

The spacious Drama Studio is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, full length mirrors (with stage curtains) and portable desks. It acts as a ‘Green Room’ when performances are held in the adjoining school hall. The school hall is a flexible multipurpose space with a modular staging system which can be erected in various configurations and which provides for a range of possible production styles. The hall benefits from a computerised stage lighting system, a sound system and video projection facilities. We have onsite costume and prop cupboards. The Drama Department is supported by the Art and Drama technician, particularly in the run up to productions.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and the expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Before appointment to any role in the school, checks including an enhanced DBS check and workplace references will be undertaken in accordance with current statutory guidance. Evidence of eligibility to work in the UK required as applicable.

The Foundation is committed to fostering an inclusive culture that promotes values and diversity and celebrates the diverse voice of our community.
