The Post
Full-Time Head of EAL for September 2017

We seek an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher to lead our EAL department. The successful candidate will be organised, motivated, and demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and the development of the whole student.

The EAL department offers a formal programme of study, with support for students at Key Stage 3, IGCSE and IB level. It is important that the successful candidate is a team player, with strong leadership qualities and a record of success in schools.

The EAL department comprises two members of staff, offering a structured and comprehensive programme of support. The main aim is to ensure that students can access the full curriculum in English and to ensure that students are prepared effectively for public examinations in IGCSE, IB, and ultimately for university in the UK. Students are taught both individually and in small groups.

Salaries are competitive - and tax-free for the first two years if coming from the UK or Ireland. Accommodation is offered for the first three months in a residence, free of charge. Our dedicated Relocation Officer helps new staff with the move.

The School

Established close to fifty years ago, the British School of Milan is an independent, co-educational, not-for-profit organisation enjoying a growing national and international reputation for excellence.

The School offers students the English National Curriculum up to (I)GCSE and the IB diploma in the Sixth Form, with a wide range of extra-curricular activities throughout. Teaching staff enjoy their work in a positive and friendly atmosphere, finding the students bright and responsive. The last two cohorts have gained an average of 35 IB diploma points, and (I)GCSE results in 2015 saw the total A*/A grades reach 66%.

Living in Milan

The school is situated close to the centre of Milan, a cosmopolitan city, the financial and economic capital of Italy, and an exciting place in which to live and work. It boasts one of the grandest squares in the country, dominated by a spectacular cathedral and arcade. Art treasures include The Last Supper by Leonardo and the Rondanini Pietà by Michelangelo, while La Scala is one of the premier opera houses in the world. The fashion houses of Prada, Armani and Versace have their headquarters here, while two of the finest football teams in Europe play in the San Siro stadium. Milan recently hosted the World Expo, and with excellent public transport and world class healthcare, there has never been a better time to live in the city.

Milan is also a transport hub, with easy access to the dramatic landscapes of the Italian Lakes and the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the cultural riches of Florence and Venice. Boasting three international airports, the city is also easily reachable from most international cities.

Safeguarding

We take great care to safeguard children in the school. Applicants must agree to undergo child protection screening. This will include checks with previous employers as well as DBS (CRB) checks.
