Job overview

Are you an experienced and well qualified EYFS practitioner who is looking to develop leadership skills in an international setting? Are you a committed Christian who would relish the chance to integrate your faith into your professional practice? Are you interested in living and working in a country so beautiful Winston Churchill declared it ‘the pearl of Africa?’ If so then Heritage International School would love to hear from you.

We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic Head of Early Years to take our EYFS provision to the next phase of development. This is a senior leadership position and the successful candidate would be expected to take the lead in planning, delivering, resourcing and assessing our curriculum. We are aiming to have the provision fully accredited by ACSI next academic year and this position will be a crucial part of achieving that goal.

The Early Years department currently has 51 students and a team of 4 teachers and 4 teaching assistants. There are 2 playgroup classes (2-3 year olds) and 1 Junior Kindergarten class (3-5 year olds). It is located in a purpose-built area of the school which has 4 classrooms alongside an outdoor space.

Heritage International School is an all-age Christian international school located in the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda. It opened in 1994 to support children of ex-pat missionaries but has since expanded to welcome those of all faiths and none, whilst still remaining true to its core Christian values. We have over 40 nationalities represented and enrollment is currently at 435.

We offer a generous benefits package to our international staff including: a return flight per year of contract, housing, 2 bursaries for staff children, a competitive monthly allowance and medical insurance. Preference will be given to those candidates who can commit to a two-year contract.

Application is via the online TES application form. Please give details of your Christian commitment in the supporting statement and ensure that your statement covers the person specification below. Alternatively you may send an up-to-date CV/Resume to headofschool@heritage.co.ug along with a letter of application detailing why you are a suitable candidate for the position.   If you require further information about the position itself then please contact our Elementary Principal, Mrs Laura Agaba, principalelementary@heritage.co.ug.

Closing date for applications: 10 am on Friday 18th October

Interviews will be via Skype on Monday 21st October

Heritage International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants will be subject to child protection screening, including checks with past employers, the UK Disclosure and Barring Service and/or authorities in other countries.

About Heritage International School

Heritage International is in Kansanga, in 14 acres of stunning grounds to the south of Kampala. We have 450 students of all ages and many nationalities. Classes are kept to a minimum of 20 across the school and we are currently double-streamed from K-Grade 9.

The school is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and is looking to grow towards its full capacity of 544 students within the next few years. The school is accredited by the Ugandan Department of Education alongside ACSI and Middle States Association.

Our curriculum is truly international: we follow the UK’s EYFS in Early Years, the International Primary Curriculum in Elementary along with Singapore Maths. In secondary students work towards their High School Diploma, complete AP courses and IGCSEs are currently being introduced for first certification in June 2021.

Heritage International School remains deeply committed to its original mission ‘to provide a quality international education in a nurturing Christian environment.’ All of our staff are committed Christians and sharing and growing their faith is one of the many positive aspects of working at Heritage. Alongside our international curriculum we also take time each day to read the Bible and pray with our students. Weekly Chapel services are a regular highlight of Heritage life.

Aside from that life at Heritage is never dull. We have a fantastic and growing programme of enrichment activities, visiting music teachers, school concerts and productions. Our sports teams have enjoyed huge success over the last few years and in 2017 we founded the International Christian Schools of Africa sports tournament which we are hosting this year. In secondary our students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, mission work and other forms of community service. The annual High School and Middle School retreats are much anticipated highlights of the first semester.

Heritage students perform very well in external testing with most students testing above Grade level in core subjects. Many of our graduates take up places at prestigious universities in Europe, the US, Africa and Asia.
