Job overview

Required from September 2024: We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified graduate as a Head of Economics and Business Studies at our Grammar School in Maidstone. We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed teacher to lead our hard-working and successful team. The post is open to experienced teachers and is a full time position.

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a Boys’ Selective Grammar School which is co-educational in the 6th Form. The NOR of the school is currently 1095. Entry at Year 7 is by the Kent Tests; competitive entry exams in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. This means that we are educating pupils in the top 25% ability range in the county.

The school was last inspected in February 2019. We were graded “Good” overall with outstanding grades for Behaviour and Welfare and for our 6th Form Provision.

There is a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities with a strong sporting tradition (football, rugby and cricket), Drama (an annual production), Music (regular concerts) and high standards in Art, Graphics and Design Technology with students’ work readily on display for all to see. We also have a successful Duke of Edinburgh programme with on average 60-70 students in Year 11 completing their Bronze award and an increasing number achieving Silver in the 6th Form.

The curriculum is a traditional grammar school one. The EBACC is compulsory at Key Stage 4, which has recently returned to a two-year programme of study. The creative subjects are, however, well represented (by Art, Music, Drama, PE and DT) with Psychology and Media Studies also available. All pupils take a full course in Religious Studies, something we are very proud of.

In the 6th Form, typically all students take three A Levels, though a number who choose to study Further Mathematics may take four. The Extended Project qualification is also available, and 60-70 students successfully complete this each year with outstanding results. We are very proud of our 6th Form. Our students are delightful, mature and thoughtful young people who make a substantial contribution to the school and local community through charitable fundraising and volunteering.

Please send your completed application form and a covering letter to jnichol@opgs.org by 12.00 noon on the closing date of Wednesday 1st May 2024.

Please note applications will only be accepted on the school application form, CVs and other forms are not accepted.

Based on the quality and quantity of applications received, OPGS reserves the right to close this vacancy sooner than the specified closing date. Therefore, early applications are encouraged.

Oakwood Park Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with former employers and Enhanced DBS check.

About Oakwood Park Grammar School

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a five-form entry (usually 160 in each year) Boys’ Grammar School of currently 1095 students.  We have a co-educational Sixth Form of 311 students.  Entry at 11 to the school is through the Kent Test (11+) where students sit three papers in Mathematics, English and Reasoning.

We have been on the site since 1959 and we share an attractive campus with two schools (St Augustine Academy and St Simon Stock) and a college of Further Education (Mid-Kent College).  This gives the site a unique feel with over four thousand students.

Our teaching and support staff are dedicated and hardworking and very loyal to the school.

Oakwood Park Grammar School has a wealth of extra-curricular activities for its students.  Sport is very strong with national success in football, alongside rugby, cricket, basketball and athletics.  We also cater for rowing, fencing, table tennis and climbing. Music and Drama are also popular with an annual production.  We also have other extra-curricular activities such as robotics, debating and chess.

Academic standards are high at both GCSE and A Level.  In the Sixth Form, on average, well over half of our students who apply to universities will secure offers from prestigious Russell Group universities and we regularly send students to Oxbridge colleges.

In 2019 we were graded Good overall by Ofsted but did achieve Outstanding for our Behaviour and our Sixth Form provision.

We are a welcoming, open school with a clear focus on developing staff, with teaching and learning at the heart of our professional development.
