Job overview

The Assistant Executive Director – Education invites applications for the post of Head of Education and Improvement.

This post will play a key role to ensure that the Council can drive forward its ambition to make education irresistible to all children and young people and to transform all education outcomes in Knowsley.

We have many examples of great practice in our schools and in our college and many of our children and young people attend good and outstanding settings. However, we want more for our children. We want every child to succeed and we need your help to make this happen.

You will need to be an outstanding leader with an exceptional track record in improving education for all. You will need to be single minded, determined and have excellent skills in developing partnerships and high performing teams. You will need to have an interest and understanding of the needs of children and young people and be able to lead our transformation plans for these children that will enable them to succeed both in childhood and in their adult life.

As well as working with colleagues in the Council and in our schools, you will be working with our newly established, independent Education Commission to help us accelerate improvement. The Commission is made up of some of the most highly respected national figures in education and we need to ensure that the Council delivers on its actions that the Education Commission has identified for us to do.

You will be responsible for: 

  • Leading the delivery of the Council’s education functions, including school admissions, attendance, inclusion and exclusion, special educational needs, safeguarding, school transport, places planning, school improvement, education excellence.
  • Leading the Schools Forum with responsibility for allocation and use of the Dedicated Schools Grant.
  • Establishing and maintaining an effective governor support system to ensure that school governance is effective and that the Local Authority is providing effective support to schools.
  • Engaging with the Education Commission and ensuring that the actions for the Council are delivered.
