Job overview

About Specialist Education Services:

We have an exemplary track record for innovative and radical work with children and young people with social, emotional and mental health complexities at Avocet House, a dual registered Children’s Home and Residential Special School, providing highly individualised education and care packages for 8 boys in the 8 to 16 years age range.

Avocet House has been judged “Outstanding” on all Ofsted criteria (both care and education) since 2009. It is regarded as a National Model of Excellence and holds Investor in People GOLD status.

We set no limits for the progress of our students or for the development of our staff. A post with Specialist Education Services is ideal for candidates who feel they would relish the opportunity to be part of a team that is innovating and extending exciting personalised programmes for the children in our care.

About the role of Head of Education:

This key executive manager works alongside the house Registered Manager and under the leadership of the Principal of Avocet House. The Head of Education leads and manages a Deputy, and a team of teachers and teaching assistants in our Learning Centre, and works in parallel with the Registered Manager to deliver our 24 Hour Learning philosophy.

As Head of Education you will be leading the Learning Centre as part of our larger holistic multi-professional team, providing a personalised learning curriculum for the children and young people in our care.

You will not be running our Learning Centre as a separate “school”, our holistic philosophy demands a team approach from all of staff under the leadership of the Principal.

Salary range is L5 – L10 £45,356 - £51,311

Experience required:

• We are seeking experienced, creative professionals who already have a degree of management experience coupled with the ability to innovate. If you have the potential we will develop it.

• You must be at one with our ‘no limits’ philosophy, understand the notion of 24 Hour Learning and have an informed view of learning in its widest sense

• An SEN specialism would be useful as would a knowledge of social, emotional and mental health issues, but this should not pre-determine whether you enquire or apply
