Job overview

Head of Education
Competitive
Newton Le Willows, St Helens

Established in 1971, Wargrave House School is a non-maintained special school for students diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. The school’s ethos of students becoming one of the ‘Wargrave Family’ where they enjoy a multidisciplinary and holistic approach towards their education, development and care has, provided students with tailored individual care and education, enabling them to maximise their potential. With a flourishing reputation, in 2004 the school was officially granted status as a registered charity and in 2012, the Trustees decided to expand the School’s learning provision to establish Lakeside Early Adulthood Provision (LEAP) Specialist College.

Today, the School and College employ more than a hundred dedicated and specialist staff who provide an extensive range of learning, therapeutic, support, sporting, outdoor education, recreational activities and residential services for more than 60 pupils aged from 5 to 25. Being located within easy reach of M6, M62 and M56 corridors means the school is easily accessible, enabling future growth of its student base locally and regionally.

Over recent times the Board has been refreshed, leading to the development of ambitious new plans for the School and College along with the recruitment of a new chief executive who starts in September.  Alongside this, the Governing Body and Trustees now seek to appoint a new Head of Education who will inspire development of new education services and learning programmes, ensuring the school and college are at the forefront specialist education provision nationally.

Reporting to the new CEO and board, in this exciting, demanding and immensely rewarding roles you will:

  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of teaching and support services staff across the school and college.
  • Ensure a culture and ethos of challenge and support, in line with the values of the Charity, where all students achieve success and become engaged in their own personalised learning programmes.
  • Contribute to the formulation and development of future strategy for the education services of the Charity, ensuring recording and delivery of appropriate Individual education, behavioural and skills programmes for all pupils and students.
  • Provide sound advice and support to the CEO and Board on all aspects of the school and college’s performance, ensuring these meet and exceed regulatory requirements and, maintain the confidence of parents, carers, regulators, commissioners and stakeholders.

We are interested to receive applications from experienced and aspirant Headteachers offering an outstanding leadership track record.  Whilst experience of leading teaching services within autism-specific institutions would be of interest, it is not essential. We therefore encourage applications from those offering relevant experience gained in wider education/special needs environments. Above all, you will demonstrate a deep connection with the aims, vision and values of the organisation and be driven to deliver the very best education, care and support for its students.
