Job overview

We require an enthusiastic and driven teacher to lead and develop the English Department. We are an 11-18 oversubscribed Catholic comprehensive school that received a ‘Good’ judgement in July 2012 from Ofsted and ‘Good’ from the Diocesan Inspectorate in October 2012. We are a ‘Catholic School for All’ with the Mission Statement ‘to educate each and every unique child in our care to hear and respond to what God calls them to be’.

The school is in the process of change and raising standards. The successful candidate will need to be able to actively lead and participate in this process. You will need to be able to evaluate and audit current practice, identify priorities for improvement and then effectively lead the English Department to improve pupil outcomes. This would include leading department briefings and meetings, quality assurance of teaching and learning in the department, monitoring and tracking progress, leading interventions and working with other middle leaders, conducting and overseeing the appraisal process. There are eight members of the English team which include a Second in Department, a Raising Achievement Leader and a Literacy across the Curriculum Leader to help facilitate your vision for the department.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to high standards of classroom practice and will understand the importance of excellent learning and teaching, having a genuine regard for young people and high professional standards. The ability to work in a team is essential; sharing good practice and providing opportunities for students and staff at different stages of their learning or careers. A track record of effective leadership with evidence of impact on pupil outcomes is essential. There would be the possibility of working closely with Senior Leaders and training to become a Specialist Leader in Education via one of our partner Teaching Schools.
