Job overview
The School
Hill House is the leading co-educational independent school in South Yorkshire. It is an exciting and expanding school of some 700 children from age 3 to 18, where teachers can teach and children can learn. The school was founded in 1912 and occupies a splendid site outside the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster.
In an £8 million move, the school relocated from an urban site in September 2008, and now occupies stunning facilities, harmonising the history of an outstanding campus with new, purposely designed 21st century facilities. Since then, a multi-million pound development project has seen the building of a new Sixth Form Centre, Music School, Sports Grounds and Dining Hall.
Academic results are the best in the area, with 58% of GCSEs being awarded 7/8/9 grades this year, and 48% of A levels being graded at A/A*. They are improving every year and compete very favourably with other independent schools; expectations are rightly high, and we are ambitious for our children.
Doncaster is a thriving and historic town with excellent communication links, little more than 90 minutes by train from Kings Cross. The culture, facilities and shops of York, Leeds, Harrogate, Nottingham and Sheffield are all within easy reach. Doncaster is surrounded by many beautiful villages in the countryside of South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire, and property prices are very reasonable indeed.
The Position
We require a teacher to inspire a love of English in pupils and lead this pivotal department within the school. The successful candidate will be a highly successful teacher from age 11 to A Level and will also liaise with the English Co-ordinator in the Junior School. This opportunity arises due to the promotion of the current Head of English to a Senior Management position.
At GCSE both English Literature and English Language are taught. Many pupils go on to study English at A level and beyond. In the Sixth Form, we offer English Literature. Classes throughout are small, averaging around 15 pupils at GCSE and 8 at A Level. The English Department also deliver Theatre Studies at A Level, and Drama to Years 7-11.
The Department has 4 well-appointed classrooms, all equipped with electronic whiteboards, and an office. There are currently 4 full time and 2 part time members of the English Department. A Level English is taught in our new Sixth Form Centre.
The school has its own performing studio and a well-equipped theatre, in which there are currently 3 major productions each year, led by various staff from throughout the school; in recent times children have performed in ‘Barnum’, ‘Twelfth Night’ and Legally Blonde’.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic teacher and leader with high expectations and established management skills.
NQTs are guided through induction under the auspices of the Independent Schools’ Induction Panel, which is fully recognised by The Department of Education.
