Head of English

Farleigh School seeks to appoint an inspirational Head of English, who will bring their passion and energy for the subject to the classroom, engage and enthuse pupils of all abilities and lead and inspire the department through their confident management style.

The successful candidate will teach a full timetable (including approximately 18 Saturdays in each academic year), promote English across the school and prepare pupils for senior school entrance examinations. All full-time teaching staff receive a half day off during the week.

As a full-time member of the school’s teaching staff, the post-holder will contribute to all-round pupil experience and development through their responsibilities, which are in keeping with a lively boarding school environment. These include:

·        Assisting with various end-of-day activities, including Prep

·        Taking boys’/girls’ games for training and fixtures or offering activities as part of the extra-curricular programme.

·        Undertaking break and lunchtime supervision duties

The successful candidate may be required to be a Form Taker.

The successful candidate will:

• Have Qualified Teacher Status
• Have a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
• Demonstrate a high level of subject knowledge and the ability to deliver excellent lessons, which engage all children
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the current Common Entrance and Scholarship curriculums or the KS2 and KS3 National Curriculum for English
• Have previous experience as a Subject Leader in either the independent or state school sector is desirable but not essential
• Be a confident, effective and people manager with the ability to manage and lead a large department
• To be able to fulfil Head of Department responsibilities, including writing long and medium-term plans
• Demonstrate a knowledge of how to provide effectively for the needs of all children
• Have a positive understanding of the level of personal and professional commitment that boarding school community life - and the extended school day during term-time - require
• Be confident in the use of technology for educational delivery and be competent in undertaking the IT-related tasks required of a full-time teacher
• Be willing to uphold and support the Catholic ethos of the school
