Job overview

Just as English plays a seminal part in a child’s education, the Head of English is a seminal role at NHP.

Not only is that person guardian of the broad, challenging English curriculum, but they serve as a guide and model for every teacher of English from Reception to Year 8.

The Head of English is central to the school’s continued success at 11+ and 13+, with particular emphasis on preparing children rigorously for 11+. The successful candidate should possess a sound knowledge of London schools’ 11+ and the 13+ Common Entrance syllabus. The ability to teach Drama, or another curriculum subject, will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will therefore be a person of energy and focus and ambitious for the children, yet sensitive to their wellbeing. As a model of organisation and collaboration for their colleagues, they will be able to quickly win their trust.

NHP strives for academic rigour without diminishing the joy of childhood. It is a school where a keen eye for a child’s happiness runs deep, balanced by a thriving pedagogy culture which aims to deliver a demanding curriculum.

NHP is a thinking school, a title which reflects its intelligent approach to education and its devotion to instilling in its children the values of resilience, creativity and responsibility, which it holds dear. We teach children not merely to learn, but to learn how to learn. The successful candidate will share the school’s aspirations.

The school is situated a stone’s throw from Portobello Road in West London and all it offers. We are a school where ambitious professionals and committed teachers are well supported, can learn quickly and advance their careers: an opportunity culture.

If you are keen to join our team, please tick the ‘Apply’ button to submit your application form.

The closing date for completed applications is Monday 5th October 2020, but early applications welcome

Interview days will be scheduled shortly afterwards. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, interviews will take place remotely: candidates can expect to have an interview, teach an observed lesson, and complete an in-tray task.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the DBS.
