Job overview

Tes is supporting the appointment of an excellent Head of English to join a school based in Northamptonshire, to lead their English faculty.

They are looking for a leader of English who loves teaching, has significant subject expertise, knows the powerful knowledge in their subject and thrives on leading effective delivery across all classrooms.

About the role

Does inspiring students in their learning in English and English Literature fill you with joy? The school's students learn Aristotle, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Shelley, Dickens, and this is just Year 7. They want their students to leave them at the end of their education, having learnt the most powerful knowledge there is to learn in English and English Literature.

They are a warm strict school with excellent standards of behaviour; they value good manners, etiquette and kindness and teach this to their students.

At the school, enrichment is part of every student’s entitlement; they offer a broad range of after school clubs for students to participate in.

At the school, they ensure that all teachers are able to draw on the sources of scholarly authority and reservoir of thought and practice that have been developed within their specialist subject communities though their subject communities. This involves engagement for teachers with their wider subject education community through subject associations, subject education journals, subject-specific CPD on curriculum development and teaching. It also involves refreshing and constant renewal of subject knowledge, through reading and discussing scholarship, engaging in contemporary debates, and developing their own practice as teachers.

Subject communities are central to the school’s vision for curriculum and teacher development, whereby each subject community is made up of subject specialist teachers deeply engaged with curricular questions, renewing and holding ownership of the curriculum and sustaining their own subject expertise. Through the subject community meetings and in-school department meetings, all subject teachers have responsibility and involvement with the curriculum development. They work collaboratively in their curriculum decision-making, so as to draw upon collective expertise and minimise unnecessary workload.

Who they are looking for:

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • A degree in English
  • Experience in leading others
  • Familiar with recent developments in the teaching and learning of the subject - including strategies for raising achievement
  • Experienced in using a range of teaching and learning styles
  • Able to use assessment date to improve achievement
  • Able to use ICT across the curriculum and for administrative purposes
  • Understand how the National Curriculum applies to all students
  • Accepting of how the Academy Specialisms can be incorporated in to the subject
  • Experience of teaching in a UK Academy

The school's mission is to give every child attending a world-class education.

Broadening the horizons of young people by inspiring students to become their confident, academic best via an education that creates academically gifted, confident, well-rounded young people in the classroom, in the workplace and in their communities.
