Head of English

Required for September 2023

TPS plus TLR: 1c £12,718

Full time, Permanent

We want to appoint a dedicated, creative, inspiring and energetic professional to direct English throughout our Outstanding school, managing our English Department and help lead, develop and improve the quality of teaching, learning, pedagogy and classroom practice. We are looking for someone with the expertise and credibility who will inspire our dedicated team of English teachers and who can also contribute to our wider system leadership work through our Teaching School Hub (East Manchester Teaching Hub). Blue Coat School is located in Oldham, Greater Manchester, and easily commutable from most of the cities and towns in the North West via the M60, M62, M6 and M56.

English is a large, successful and important department within the school, based in its own building, with 12 modern and fully-equipped classrooms, an office for the Director of English and a staff room for the department. There are currently 12 members of staff in the department. All pupils take AQA GCSE Language and Literature in Year 11 and numbers are strong at A Level. At A Level we use WJC and offer both English Literature and English Language.

This post would be ideal for an outstanding practitioner , passionate and informed about the best classroom practice in English with ambition and drive, and some leadership experience (perhaps as a head or second in a subject or department or leading on literacy, curriculum, T&L or assessment) and who sees a faculty leadership position as the next step in their career. A-Level teaching experience is preferred but by no means essential.

Working for The Blue Coat School means that you would be part of the Cranmer Education Trust, a successful, growing Trust which prides itself on looking after its people, offering a high level of support and access to expertise. This is an excellent time to join the team, as we develop collaborative structures and systems to enhance and support our growing family of schools.

Alongside Blue Coat, the Trust is made up of St Anne’s Academy in Middleton, The Brian Clarke CE Academy and two primary schools - East Crompton St George’s and Mayfield Primary. The Trust also incorporates a teacher training school and the East Manchester Teaching Hub; both of which support the training and development of new and existing teachers across the North West of England. For further details please visit https://careers.cranmereducationtrust.com/.

We offer:

·        Opportunities for professional development in a growing Trust

·        Teachers career average pension scheme including life insurance and dependent’s pension

·        Central Oldham location close to good transport networks

·        Convenient location for motorway (Junction 22, M62), bus and tram networks

The Blue Coat School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The Cranmer Education Trust follows safer recruitment practices. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020 and appointment is therefore subject to a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service.

About The Blue Coat CofE School

Welcome to The Blue Coat School

Mission statement:  Faith – Vision – Nurture

Welcome to The Blue Coat School website, which we hope will give you a really good insight into our school, and show how our young people are learning how to become everything they can be, and are meant to be.  You will find all the information about student achievement and progress across the curriculum, and links to national performance data and reports, so you can see how well our young people do, and why we are very proud of our academic record.  Just as important, you’ll also find, in the newsletters especially, a picture of life in a dynamic community where students grow in confidence, independence, leadership and resilience, not only in their lessons, but in the breadth of Blue Coat’s provision.  I hope you will also see how the school’s Christian ethos shines through, and that all our young people, of all faiths and denominations, learn to grow together in love, compassion, generosity of spirit, and mutual respect.  If you are an education professional, or would like to join this great profession, you’ll also find links to our work as a National Teaching School and lead school of The Northern Alliance and our work on system leadership, school-to-school support, research and development, and training the best teachers through the School Direct programme.  We look forward to meeting you.
