Hampton Court House is a fast-growing co-educational independent school situated in beautiful riverside parkland between Richmond and Hampton in southwest London. The school has almost 300 pupils from Early Years through to Year 13.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher and leader to head a highly successful English department. Last year 53% of A level grades were A*-A and 93% of GCSE English language grades were 7-9 (A*-A) with 71% 8-9 (A* grades).

Candidates should have the ability and confidence to teach English throughout the school, from Year 7 to Year 13, with an interest and willingness to understand the challenges of KS1 and KS2 a distinct advantage. The candidate must be a model of written and spoken English, be an excellent proof-reader and have an eye for detail.

The ideal candidate will be able to submit examples of his or her own writing (fact or fiction and in any genre) and will be extremely well read with regards to the classics, contemporary literature, as well as children’s and teenage fiction.

We are looking for a well-qualified graduate (with a good degree from a leading university), with a range of cultural and intellectual interests, who will be able to contribute to the ethos of the school. All our teachers are expected to take part in the wider life of the school.

If you would like to discuss informally further details of the post, please contact the headmaster, Guy Holloway by email (gh@hchnet.co.uk) with the subject line ‘Head of English enquiry’.

Deadline for applications:  Monday 3 February 10 am.

Early applications are encouraged and we reserve the right to appoint before the end of the deadline.

A generous fee reduction is available on tuition fees for the children of all members of staff at Hampton Court House. The school is a 7 minute walk from Hampton Court station (zone 6) which has direct trains from Wimbledon, Clapham Junction and Waterloo. There is onsite parking. Lunch is provided free of charge during the term.

Hampton Court House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
