We are looking for an inspirational Head of English who has strong leadership skills and is full of energy and enthusiasm for their subject. Wirral Grammar School for Girls is an exciting school to work in. The school has achieved “Outstanding in all categories” from Ofsted in 2008 and every year since in the DfE data checking. In 2005 we became a high performing English and Humanities College alongside our Science and Modern Foreign Languages Specialist status. Although specialist college funding has finished, we continue many of our initiatives. Funding will be made available for this.

At GCSE, 100% achieved at GCSEs (A*-C) for both Language and Literature with 61% at A*/A grade. At A Level, Language - 88% achieve grades A*-B with 55% at A*/A. Literature - 89% achieve grades A*-B with 78% at A*/A

Developing stimulating and student-centred teaching and learning is at the centre of our school development plan. We are ambitious and committed to the provision of all girls’ education, and our aspiration is to continue to be outstanding in all areas.

English is particularly popular in the sixth form, where currently girls study English Language and English Literature A level in a sixth form of 300. The successful candidate will enjoy excellent support from an experienced and dedicated team of English staff in a well-resourced department. Results are very strong and we are looking for someone who relishes the prospect of keeping the department outstanding whilst bringing new ideas into the school. Respectful relationships between staff and students are central to the school’s positive ethos and make this a happy and fulfilling school in which to work.

A message from the Headteacher

Welcome to Wirral Grammar School for Girls. We have been a

Grammar School educating girls aged 11-18 since 1931 and now have just over 1200 students, 300 of them in the sixth form.

The school is proud of its history of academic success and our results are consistently high, well above the national average with 75% 9-7 grades at GCSE and 75% A*-B grades at A Level. The school has topped the local and national league tables for the past fifteen years. We have recently received an 'outstanding' judgement from Ofsted (December 2022).

The school offers an inclusive learning community, with the highest standards of teaching and learning, where there is a lively buzz of activity and curiosity in the classroom. Girls are also provided with an enrichment programme to extend their learning outside the classroom, through clubs/societies and various leadership opportunities.

We have always fostered traditional values, notably self-discipline, community spirit and thoughtfulness for others resulting in outstanding relationships at the school.

Our pastoral care ensures students are well-supported and are guided through their journey at school. Wirral Grammar School for Girls is a vibrant learning community where everyone is valued and a culture of mutual respect exists.
