Job overview

Do you want to be part of a team that will change the lives of children that they teach?

An exceptional school: Our vision is to provide a world class education for young people in Newham. Lister is a large 11-16 comprehensive school at the heart of its community. Recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country (DfE, January 2014) this is reflected in our sustained drive to become an Outstanding school with our exceptional Progress 8 at +0.54 and improving 5(A*-C) including English & Maths at 65%, the sixth consecutive year this has increased. Almost all our students take History or Geography to GCSE level the whole school studies RS, and many students take more than one Humanities subject. Humanities also comprises PSHE teaching.

The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Music Foundation and the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust, and working in collaboration with Highbury Grove School in Islington.

Opportunity for further impact: Geography results for 2016 were more than 7% above national rates for A* to C; over 12% for History; and over 10% for RS. Sociology's A* to C rate is almost 90%. Humanities has a consistent and positive effect on our Progress 8 scores. In History, RS and Sociology well over 50% of students make better than expected progress, with a figure close to 70% for RS.

A positive impact: Our students are courteous, motivated and have high aspirations. We promote a real enjoyment of History, Geography, RS, Sociology and PSHE, and you would be working in a school where 61% of students are identified as Pupil Premium and around 60% with EAL, where staff see this as no barrier to learning and are committed to addressing educational disadvantage.

The chance to develop: Work in a young, dynamic and energetic team where our intention is to transform the lives of young people in Newham. Our teaching and learning has been influenced by the high impact American charter schools and we aim to also get the best possible results for every child. Engage with and lead a broad range of exceptional CPD tailored to your own professional development as a Head of Faculty. Work in a team that provides real opportunities for career progression.

As part of our continued focus to further develop impact on student progress we are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Head of Faculty to join our dedicated Humanities team. If you think you have the potential to work as an outstanding teacher within one or more Humanities subjects - we are looking for a History or RS specialist - as well as being an inspirational Head of Faculty, leading a high performing team, then an application form can be downloaded directly from the TES website or Lister’s website: http://www.lister.newham.sch.uk/vacancies/teaching-vacancies/ or by contacting Jackie Young (HR Manager) on 020 8471 3311. Completed applications must be returned to the school at the above address, or by email to: jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced DBS checks.

Completed application forms are required by 4.00pm on Tuesday 18th April, 2017

Interviews: Friday 21st April, 2017 subject to applications.

We will only be contacting those candidates who have been selected to progress to the next stage of the process.
