We’re looking for a Head of Faculty – Science to join our team at Red Moor School near Lanlivery in mid-Cornwall. Someone who is organised, self-motivated and keen to make a difference would be perfect for this role.

  • Salary: Up to £40,000 per annum depending on experience and qualifications
  • Hours: 42.5 hours per week; Monday to Friday
  • Contract: Permanent

Red Moor School is a specialist provision positioned near Lanlivery in mid-Cornwall. The school provides full-time specialist co-education for up to 36 children aged 5-16 who have social, emotional, mental health and communication difficulties or associated behaviours that challenge. Unable to achieve in a mainstream environment, our aim is to help pupils excel by providing a structured, nurturing approach, with students accessing a broad, balanced, engaging and extraordinarily rich curriculum. With its large building and extensive grounds, Red Moor School is an environment where children learn to thrive both in the classroom and outdoors, helping them to be the best.

 About the Role

The successful applicant will have specific responsibilities in this role:

Core tasks and responsibilities:

  • To secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improve standards of learning and achievement for all pupils in consultation with the Headteacher
  • To teach a range of subjects as necessary to ensure the effective delivery of the school’s curriculum
  • In consultation with the Headteacher undertake other identified areas of responsibility as necessary to ensure effective delivery of the school’s curriculum
  • To raise standards of pupil engagement, attainment and achievement across the Science faculty in the school through the provision of high-quality teaching and learning opportunities activities.
  • Monitor and support pupil progress through liaising with the Heads of Faculty as appropriate
  • To be accountable for ensuring the Faculty of Science contributes effectively towards pupil progress and outcomes across the school
  • To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated science curriculum accessible to all pupils at the school
  • To deploy financial and physical resources within the faculty effectively to support the school and faculty development plans

Essential: 

  • Relevant honours degree
  • QTS status
  • Minimum of grade 4 (or equivalent) in GCSE English and Maths
  • Knowledge of recent developments in learning and teaching
  • A reflective practitioner who consistently seeks to improve their teaching to support learning and accelerate student progress
  • A good understanding of effective ways to facilitate learning
  • A strong understanding of the national curriculum
  • Good working knowledge of relevant qualification opportunities
  • Evidence of commitment to extended learning for students beyond the classroom

Desirable: 

  • Evidence of qualifications in SEND specific subjects
  • Evidence of leadership qualifications, such as NPQs
  • Teaching experience across all Key Stages
  • Experience working in an SEMH setting
  • Knowledge and experience of monitoring student progress and effective use of student data to trigger intervention
