Job overview

The Grange School is seeking to recruit a Head of Food & Nutrition on a full time or 0.8 FTE basis. This would be to commence in January 2020; however, a later start date would be considered for the right candidate. The Department has one other member within the team who works one day per week and a Technician supporting classes.

We are looking for a person who has the confidence to work alongside highly motivated and skilled teaching professionals in a sometimes pressurised but always vibrant environment; a ‘people person’ who is at ease in all types of company and displaying genuine personal warmth.

Food & Nutrition is taught as part of a carousel with Graphic Design to all pupils in Year 7 & 8 over a 16 week period with 3 double lessons every fortnight. The programme of study is delivered in purpose built kitchen facilities; working with a class size of around 12. Each student has their own designated workspace and various screens allow them to view instructions and audio-visual resources whilst undertaking practical work.

During Food & Nutrition lessons students explore topics such as nutrition, food safety, food choices and dietary needs/preferences, food provenance and food around the world. The focus of the Year 7 and Year 8 course is to help our pupils become well informed consumers as well as providing them with practical life skills that enhance their health and wellbeing. Alongside curriculum lessons, the Food & Nutrition department offers students the chance to further practice and refine their skills on challenging dishes in lunchtime Cookery Clubs for Junior & Inters students and support the Sixth Form’s transition to university life via ‘University Survival Cookery’. The department also contributes to the wider enrichment programme, such as running House Cookery competitions for each section and a Fairtrade Bake Off during Fairtrade Fortnight.

The department also inspires a love of food and the skills by inviting ‘Food Experts’ to deliver talks at The Grange and also supports individual students to part in various regional and national competitions – most recent success has been in the Tunnocks Tea Cake challenge!

The Grange School has been one of the great success stories of independent education over the past forty years. The school was founded in 1933 as a Kindergarten and Preparatory School. In 1977, the Governors took the major step of developing secondary education and since 1978 the school has grown steadily and developed an outstanding academic reputation. Today, The Grange has a total enrolment of 1223 students with 429 in the Junior School (4-11 years) and 794 in the Senior School. It is consistently one of the best performing schools in Cheshire and undoubtedly among the very best independent co-educational day schools in the country.

Our academic results speak for themselves; we are consistently one of the highest ranking co-educational independent schools in the country. In 2023, 22% of GCSE entries were awarded grade 9. At A Level (in 2023), 21% of entries were awarded an A* grade. Thanks to these excellent results, the majority of our leavers (approximately 75%) go on to join their first-choice university.

More importantly we are a very happy school. The relationship between staff and students is exceptional; although very busy and, at times, pressurised, it is a pleasure to work and study in such a friendly environment. Expectations of teachers and pupils are high, but this serves both to stimulate achievement and provide reward.

We understand our chief purpose to be to help produce young people who truly flourish and find fulfilment as adults. We try to do this by helping them to identify and develop their unique combination of strengths, talents and passions, and to challenge them to find a purpose for their lives which such attributes can serve.
